The New Orleans Saints may have shocked quite a few when they took Stanford tackle Andrus Peat at No. 13 overall, forgoing a pass rusher or wide receiver at the same spot.

Espescially because even Saints coach Sean Payton admitted that offensive tackle was not a top need.

"Offensive tackle, we viewed as a position that wasn't a high priority in the draft but was certainly a need position," he said. "Maybe not a must, but a need."

There's also the issue of both tackle spots being currently locked down with Zach Strief on the right and Terron Armstead on the left.

"Terron's done a great job obviously and Zach's been fantastic. Every year, we're trying to draft the quality of the player that's available, and all that other stuff will handle itself and work itself out," Payton said.

"It would be easy if you were just selecting right where you need a player, and honestly I don't think that's the right way to approach it. We've never approached it that way. I feel like we've got a real good offensive linemen coming in."

Neither Strief nor Armstead will move to guard.

"I don't see that initially," Payton said. "Terron and Zach, shoot, one's a veteran, experienced, tremendous leader for us at right tackle. The other one is a real sharp and talented left tackle. Andrus will come in and I'm sure we'll give him reps at both positions.

Payton said he doesn't see Peat coming in to play guard, which currently has a vacant spot after the Saints traded Ben Grubbs. Tim Lelito is the frontrunner to take that spot.

"I don't see that," Payton said. "He's a tackle."

However, with all that aside, Payton said Peat was the highest player left on their board at No. 13, and someone that impressed them from the start.

"We feel like he certainly has a ceiling that's extremely high, and I would say, the two sacks we saw on the highlight film today were the only two of the season," Payton said. "His production was outstanding...

"I love the way this guy plays. I absolutely love it."

It is a little bit confusing in the short term. Solid long term pick though.

Bingo. It seems he's a guy they liked so much they couldn't pass him up. I like that.

Though it appears we still need a guard....I thought I heard someone mention Strief could play guard? Guess not..... draft La'el Collins!

FYI all of that presser info (this happened immediately after the draft) is why I have been melting down. He confirmed we spent 13 on a backup.

Key quote there. Come second/third week of camp, watch Strief move inside. Armstead and Peat are too athletic to confine them at guard

Its a fundamental difference between how fans/draftniks and actual teams approach the draft.

Bill Polian was on the radio this morning talking about it. He basically said we are just looking to put together a football team. We are thinking of getting the best players we can and getting them on the field and contributing over the course of their contract. They don't think like fans at all.

He also said so called draft gurus like Kiper have a list of players 1-336 or whatever and then people talk about well its the 75th rated guy you picked at 62 and you reached. Teams do NOT think like that at all, they don't even have guys rated in that manner whatsoever.

As pointed out initially is the key word. If Peat is legit someone will move inside.

Kiper is a glorified message board poster. He has no idea how teams operate so Polian was spot on.

Um, so we burned a #13 on a non-pressing need, and not a must (DE,LB,OG,WR)?

Exactly
They go to camp, two emerge and one gets benched for depth or traded. If peat was their BPA then take him and sort it out

The Giants had Strahan and added Tuck, Umenyora and Pierre-Paul from 2007-2011.

They drafted the BPA that further strengthened a team strength

So you think Strief moves inside?

Yep, i dont think its ever bad to add depth to either line.

And as i said tonight and today, we have 4 other picks in the top 80 of the draft. Maybe they bring Peat along slowly, maybe they dont. But we still have 4 shots to nab contributors to this team for 2015.

He's play guard before (which I knew before Duncan told me). He makes the most sense.

What will be interesting is if we take a guard to start. To me that signals Armstead to the bench, which is disappointing. But he hasn't played as well as Strief so you play the best players.

Spot on

Neglecting the core of the team for flashy pieces in the draft and fixing it in FA is what lead to the problems last year

Plus both picks are high character leadership types in key positions. That had been lost over the past few years
