Well anyone with sense knows you have to build a front seven before you can start building a secondary. You build from the front outward. The Saints did not have a front seven even with Junior and Cam which were both great players. Their LBs still were average if that and they lacked DT. Furthermore, they had no depth in the front seven which made the signing even more strange. All that money could've been used on depth or just finding an all-world player in the front seven.

In Byrd terms that means Week 6.

Try week 8.

He was a top 3 S in the league before he came to the Saints so at the time it wasn't a bad signing. The Saints have a way of fricking up any defensive talent when you're almost devoid of it on defense as it is. When you only have a couple guys who can play and then the rest of your starters/depth shouldn't be starting on an NFL team, it makes everyone around them look bad. It's not just Byrd but our scheme is broke. A guy like Byrd is not even used to his strengths like he was in Buffalo. Not sure it would matter but it certainly wouldn't hurt.

while in part true, he also had some hip and foot issues in buff, and a bit of a reputation for being soft around the front office there. he didnt miss many starts til the foot issues/contract dispute but was also off the field a lot during games through his career.

hes still a very good player when healthy and in a position to succeed --- but he wasnt a slam dunk.

Until Payton realizes his buddy coaches are dragging him down on this team we'll never improve.

It's why LB play and special teams will continue to suck arse.

We had decent LB play when we had some talent in Vilma and Fajita. Say what you want about those buddies (and I think we should have cleaned house), but we haven't had much talent on the dline or at LB

According to PFF, he had a ridiculously high snap % outside of the contract dispute year

Vilma and Fujita didn't need to be developed when they got here.

Fajitas first 2 years were actually under Vitt in KC

But that wasn't really my point, which is: we haven't exactly invested draft picks into top talent at the linebacker position

I get that too an extent, but to his point how good is your position coach if he can't get anybody to excel unless they are a 1st/2nd round pick or already a good free agent?

Mickey really f'd this one up. Byrd has done literally nothing for us and set us back financially.
But the fan base was in full FAP mode when Mickey initially signed him.

95% of the media and fans were in full FAP mode. it was an amazement we even were able to sign him.

People forget what led up to it:
1. Defense front 7 balled out with JG and CJ leading the way.
2. Your safeties were a step in the wrong direction in coverage so they were late on making plays on the ball. They were the two lowest ranked safeties in the league while the front 7 were top 5.
3. Vaccaro balled out his rookie season
4. Byrd was one of the biggest ballhawks in the league at the time

Everyone was. The media crowned him the #1 available free agent and went nuts with disbelief when the "cash strapped" Saints signed him.

Saints didn't do their homework on a player that was damaged goods upon purchase.

maybe a free throw, ignoring his cost (which you kind of can't ignore) he was average. we could have it bad...he could be a TOTAL shite show and play like jenkins when he was here.
