Signing bonus isn't owed. That's dead money if he's traded.

So that $7 million is more of a reason to keep him...

The intelligent thing to do is an extension for a lower rate converting his base salary for 2016 into a signing with team options after each season

So extend him further so you just have to absorb a cap hit in the future? That is the exact philosophy that has put the Saints in this cap hell.

Money due doesn't equal cap hit.

You should read up on the salary cap, prorated money, dead money, cap increases, vet exceptions, roster bonuses, workout bonuses, etc before trying to state incorrect things as fact.

Trading Drew results in the prorated bonus hitting us as dead money.

Eating dead money put us in this situation. You want to add to that.

I'm talking about a mutually beneficial deal that prevents a dead money hit, gives the team an option to part ways after each season, and converts his base salary to a signing bonus.

Extra cap space rolls over year to year too, so it actually doesn't theoretically roll the cap hit down the line if you save the extra space created

Salary cap can be confusing. You'll understand one day if you put in the work.

After last Sunday I am way more comfortable if Drew Brees doesn't play. We have a competent backup. Yes we are still 0-3 though. Drew or not, the way the team is playing we win 4-6 games this year.....It ain't happening.

Smh, you should send this message to ole Mickey. You re delusional if you think this team is going anywhere with Brees and the sooner they realize this the better. This team is rebuilding and having a qb eat up such a large amount of cap will only prolong the rebuild.

Still waiting for your breakdown.

We've taken a big step discussing money owed vs money due and dead money.

Dead money, something the Saints have a good bit of (most in the NFL). Let's add another $7 million and have to replace a HoF QB instead.

Now that is a recipe for success!!!

Drew Brees (shoulder) had a successful throwing session on Tuesday and will resume practicing on Wednesday.
Brees missed last week's game with a sprained rotator cuff but is confident it was just a one-week absence. Luke McCown did a serviceable job in his place, completing 31-of-38 passes for 310 yards in a loss to Carolina. If Brees can put in a full week of practice without encountering any setbacks, we'd expect him to play Sunday against Dallas.

Chill. He'll be on Sunday night football in prime time in the dome against Dallas

Some of our other defensive pieces should be back as well.

It's been over for a couple years now. You folks in here just holding on to 2009 Just like the Saints are.
When Drew can throw 30 yard passes with zip on the ball that doesn't get our wide outs in jump ball situations or getting picked off ill party like iits 2009

Yes the Hof version of Drew is definitely worth the salary, but you re blind if you think this team is going anywhere with his regressing skill set. Why not take the cap hit of $7 million and have $20 million to use elsewhere. This team at best is 2 good drafts away from being playoff worthy.

Dont change your tune to the above. You said he was done for the year and you wouldnt be surprised if he never played for us again.
