Let me help out here. Three QBs on the roster is generally considered a need in case Brees were to get hurt. Then you have Grayson and Flynn active the next week.

This isn't college football where there is no reads and no thinking by QBs. The backup QB is like a 2nd mind for the starter on the sideline and help the starter analyze what they are and aren't seeing. They're constantly connected to the upstairs staff as well, to assist with this.
Grayson is a 3rd round pick who still needs time to develop. He doesn't know what he is seeing on an NFL field because he hasn't been around long enough. He was in the MWC last year. Brees needs a guy who knows what he's looking at. It's why McCown was still on the roster in the first place.

I was pretty down on him early preseason. Then he earned the job. Wouldn't mind seeing him have a shot next year. Had an excellent outing his one real shot.
