Only reasoning behind thinking this is that was the original deal reported. All of it has played out just like that except for Butler and #42
The Saints can't even give them #42 unless N.E. does a sign-and-trade. If they have a first round tender on Butler I can't imagine they'd settle for #42. Although it's only a 10-spot drop.

Just curious, but does anyone know what Butler makes if no one offers him a contract and he has to stay in NE?

Don't hold me to this, but I think I remember seeing $3.91 million.

That's the only way this gets done. Saint's are signing him to an offer sheet. Either he signs his tender and gets traded or signs the long term deal and gets traded. It won't happen for #11. This happened a few years ago with Chris Ivory

We had a second round tender on him but traded him for a 4th. He signed his second round tender then got traded for a 4th and signed a new contract with the Jets.

It isn't uncommon in the NFL for this to happen. I don't get why everyone thinks it's going to be different this time

For the record, a 3rd this year and a 2nd next year can reach the point value of the 32.

I wouldn't rule something like this out.

THANK YOU - That's the example I couldn't put my finger on. I knew we were part of an RFA trade for less than tender fairly recently.

Because ESPN is only reporting the offer sheet option, which includes the #11. They are not reporting it as it is going to happen.

So we can't draft and we suck at free agency

So where have we gotten our good players from?

Malcolm Butler has 36 combined interceptions and pass breakups over the last 2 years. Only Marcus Peters has more.

If we signed him to an offer sheet the Pats could match or get pick 11.

That isn't going to happen. We are going to work out a deal with Butler, then he will sign his tender and the Pats will trade him to us for a lesser amount, likely either 32 (which seems to be the case from insiders) or 42.

The end.

People put ridiculously high tenders on their players on purpose. That's why hardly any players sign an offer sheet. Also why I don't complain about players wanting a new contract. They have a limited time to play and have to maximize it where they can. NFL is not very player friendly on the contract end.

There are a lot of corners in the draft every year. There were corners in the draft when they picked PRob. There were corners in the draft when they picked Jean-Baptiste.

Gotcha. I don't think we can get a better player at 32 than Butler. The only part that would upset me is this organization really dropped the ball by completely devaluing Cooks. They pulled the triggered too fast over a 700,000 roster bonus absolutely no one would have cared about them paying.

So you would rather go in to the season with a rookie, PJ Williams, and Breaux (combined 8 games played last year) as opposed to Butler, over 10 spots in the draft, and ~$3mil per year? I fully understand the value of the 5th year option for #32, but value doesn't play CB.

I'm just slightly uneasy about giving them #32 back just because we have to immediately pay Butler top level money. NE is getting better value here, they get 2 years with cooks before they have to decide on keeping him long term.
