Nothing else to do, so here's the numbers:

Projected 173.7mil cap
- We have 30.8mil in space available

Contracts we can alter:
1. Jairus Byrd - 11.7mil cap hit, 7.9mil base salary; cutting saves 3.7mil
- Ask for a 4mil pay cut this year, 4mil cut next year, and a 4mil signing bonus. Guarantee his 3.9 base salary and give him an incentive laden contract if he hits INT markers he can recoup the 4mil (every INT = 500k guarantee)
- Adds 2.7mil in cap space (Currently 33.5mil)

2. Terron Armstead
- Restructure his 5mil roster bonus
- Adds 4.0mil (Currently 37.5mil)
**** This is actually a contract I would prefer not to restructure due to health concerns long term. he hasn't been healthy a full season and it worries me if he sustains another knee injury that can be detrimental long term. His contract is actually removable next year if we don't touch it*****

3. Max Unger
- Restructure his 3.95mil roster bonus
- Adds 2.6mil in cap space (currently 40.1mil)

4. Kenny Vaccaro
- Extend him now, could save somewhere between 2-3mil this year
- Adds 2.5mil in cap space (currently 42.6mil)

5. Michael Hoomanawanui
- With his health concerns, it makes it hard to keep him. At the same time, I think he's a better FB/TE than Kuhn and younger. You do save 1.3mil in cap space, but only lose 670k in dead space if you were to cut him. That space would go to paying Kuhn anyway if you do...so realistically its more or less better to keep him than cut him to pay Kuhn

So 4 realistic moves, no cuts, and we're sitting at 42.6mil in cap space

Notable Free Agents:
Bold are guys we keep

Offense:
Jahri Evans, Willie Snead, Tim Hightower, Brandon Coleman, John Kuhn, Tim Lelito
- Evans: Minimum 1.0mil - this is a. 'just incase' I honestly expect a draft/FA. He did play well.
- Snead: Lowest tender 1.7mil
- Hightower: Minimum 900k
- Coleman: Lowest Tender 1.7mil
Salary Cap: 37.3mil left

Defense:
Nick Fairley, Sterling Moore, Kasim Edebali, Roman Harper, Paul Kruger, Michael Mauti, BW Webb
- Fairley: 3yr/21mil (10mil guarantee) - just assigning 7mil cap hit for general ease, I think he actually signs for 8-9mil/yr.
- Moore: Minimum 775k - depth, I think we let wilson go
- Edebali: Minimum 690k - depth, but I honestly like Tapp more but Kikaha should be the #1 backup anyway and he was solid vs the run
- Harper: Minimum 1mil - confused IMHO on if 'veteran depth' is worth it for Harper @ 1mil. Evans at least plays and plays well, Harper just seems like a cheerleader...he needs to retire and be a coach but is he ready to do so? I think he stays one last year.
Salary Cap: 27.8mil left

Special Teams:
Justin Drescher
- Minimum 900k - kind of have to, but we should look for another guy soon, it saves us another 500k or so as drescher is getting up there
Salary Cap: 26.9mil left

Notable free agents:
Danny Woodhead RB

Ronald Leary G
Luke Joeckel G
Kevin Zeitler G

Chandler Jones DE/OLB
JPP DE
Mario Addison DE
Melvin Ingram DE/OLB

Malcolm Smith ILB
Zach Brown ILB
Kevin Minter ILB
Kiko Alonso ILB (RFA)
Jamie Collins OLB

Trumaine Johnson CB
Stephon Gilmore CB
Captain Munnerlyn CB
Mo Claiborne CB
Darius Butler CB
Dre Kirkpatrick CB
AJ Bouye CB

Comparison sake, the NYG signed Jenkins and Vernon to a combined:
5yr/147.5mil contract
- Their first year cap hit was 21mil combined

No way Unger should restructure or be asked. He is the only one with a pulse on that line.

We had one of the top Olines in the league. I do think we could use a younger G and draft a T to play behind Strief after next season.

Wow I did not notice they were ranked that highly. That's my bad.

No way we should expect Streif and Evans to start again(would be great of course)

Thats two starters on the o-line I think we need to add at minimum. Whether they win the start or are quality depth.

Can the FO find via draft or FA a starting DE, lb'er and CB.

I think we need all three.

Why should we not expect Strief to start next season? He's there in permanent ink unless there is an injury

quote:

Right tackles have been outperformed by their left-sided teammates, despite (or because of?) some of the league’s most dominant pass-rushers coming from their side of the line. Zach Strief has gone up against some of the league’s best edge defenders this season, and allowed 19 total QB pressures, with just three penalties to his name; he has earned good grades in all facets of the game.

Do you understand how "restructuring" a roster bonus works? It is basically a paper transaction whereby the roster bonus is converted to a signing bonus so that it can be spread over the remaining contract. The player still gets the same money (a lot of times earlier than the actual roster bonus would have been paid).

Restructuring is usually beneficial to the player. You restructure players that you expect to be here for a bit and it allows you to spread out their by converting salary or roster bonuses into a signing bonus. He has a $4 million roster bonus next year that can be converted spreading it out over the final 3 years

Since the cap rolls over year to year, there really isn't a reason to not restructure a contract if you need space.

We have 4 good offensive lineman. 2 elite for their position and another playing at a very, very high level. Unger, Peat, and Armstead is a hell of a trio on the left side.

Yea, there really is no need to keep Edebali if Kikaha can stay healthy. I'd rather keep Kruger & Tapp, b/c they stop the run much better...especially Tapp.

I'd rather find another safety than keep Harper around. Vaccaro, Bell, Byrd, & Erik Harris are all likely to make the team. I like Jamarca Sanford more than Harper as well.

Yeah, I've seen enough of Harper. Hopefully he taught KV some stuff and now it's time for him to retire

Put Greybeard on staff. I can think of at least 3 coaches I would fire to make room for him

Its not a question for me if I want him. Dude is a all time Saints great.

If I were GM I would make sure there is good competition for RT. I don't think that exist now or for guard for that matter. If Peat is their fall back RT in case Streif shows his age one day that leaves us with almost nothing at either guard spot. By nothing I mean 09 quality.

Armstead and Unger (and likely Strief) have their bonuses set to automatically convert.

But we may cut Strief before his kicks in, saving us a little more cap. I think it's unlikely given his play and our injury concerns but you never know.

Also Snead is an ERFA(exclusive rights), so he automatically gets signed for minimum as long as we tender him, and NO ONE else can sign him away (because exclusive rights).

Also confused about some of your numbers, like Armstead saving $6.7 mil. He'd only save $4 mil when his bonus converts ($5 mil spread over the 5 year max).

I forget how much Unger will save, but it's less than $3 mil iirc.

My mistake, so it becomes something like 1.7mil as opposed to 2.5mil. I thought the ERFA was a '2nd round' tender for some reason.

Just punching it into OTC's calculator. I think we had this problem last year too with it being kind of off a few hundred thousand.
