Well with Harper officially gone we lost our only decent cover LB unless Butler is good at it.

I think we definitely have to target someone(inside or outside) that has speed and can cover in the draft, free agency, or both.

Depth at LB, Safety, and Corner is now extremely thin.

The more I look at it and with what Jimmy reportedly wants it's looking like a real tough pill to try to pay both he and Drew huge money and stay competitive elsewhere. We pay him and we are only set at QB, TE, and DLine.

I think Vacarro has done more than we know. I think he has finally shown the staff what speed and sure tackling looks like and what it can do.
I hope/think this will lead to a faster team on defence.
Every time I watched frisco and seattle it looked liked they had 15 guys on the defensive side of the ball.
If we can have a draft like 2013 we will do well.
And after last year I don't doubt what the Saints can do in FA any more Even though it looks tough as hell to secure anything more than players for just depth at this point.

As for JG I've said in another thread I've moved on from all the drama. There is no drama. He gets tagged as a TE this year which we can handle and we worry about a long term deal this time next year.

Like I needed another reason to dislike Godell he just keeps f@cking with my draft and now its even further away

I concur. I don't think Vic But will be any good at it either. I was a huge advocate for bringing back Harper for less money and playing him near the LOS. I know he's a cap casualty and it's really a shame because when you look at how Rex plans his D, he was truly an asset. People bash him, but I liked him on our defense.

We need to look at safety now more than ILB/OLB. The only true safety we have on the team is Vaccaro. He's a guy that could play deep center, but we're not going to want to play him there. Too good around the LOS. Bush is an up-and-comer, but I don't trust him deep center - yet. Malc Jenks is a tweener type of guy, doesn't really have that natural hip movement you see in a safety and I can't see him being an effective corner for us. I like him out there though, he makes plays... We need a true, rangy safety that can play deep center and force QBs to check down. I don't know if there's anyone in FA worth getting.

Inside, I think they stick with Hawthorne, Lofton, Humber, and Reddick. The last two being younger guys who contribute from time to time. I think Reddick needs another year, but will be ready when one of the older guys leave. Humber is a one trick pony who is very good at that trick. He's quick to the ball carrier, but can get washed out in the blocks. His shedding needs some work. Sideline to Sideline he is very quick.

Outside, we haven' see either one of the supposed starters actually play true 3-4 outside. Junyeah will play OLB as will Butler. Harrelson is good depth, if cheap.

I wouldn't be against drafting another OLB, but I think CB or S is the need, withe the release of Harper and Greer. Depth is also an issue there. We know they will need it, because DB injuries happen every year in New Orleans.

But where does Harper fit in the LB conversation?

eta: and since when can he cover?

Maybe so. There's so many idiotic comments made on here sometimes that it's hard to tell.

I think he may have been talking about if Harper were to come back for less money, play him at more of a LB position as a situational player. Which I agree with. He's not the best coverage guy on slot receivers, but if you look at the rest of the league and compare him to other LINEBACKERS he's a decent coverage guy, in that respect.

Yep. Next thing you know, someone will come in all serious, talking about how we should bring back Harper as a LB because he covers like one.

ETA: I should read the whole thread before I respond an hour later. lol

lol. I was just kidding. I saw the post before I posted.

I'm not sure how the whole "Harper to LB" would work out, but if the coaches thought it would work, i'd be all for trying it.

Could probably try to make a move for Mingo from the Browns. Still young with potential

Yeah this mostly.

But also with his skills and the way he was used he was much more comparable to a LB than a safety.

Good blitz skills, excellent in the box tackler, good coverage in the box and on short routes(decent on medium routes), poor in deep coverage, and sometimes misses 1 on 1 in the open field.

And with the way Williams, Spags towards the end of the year, and Ryan used him, he was in the box more often than not. He's likely a big reason we never really went after a cover LB until we grabbed Hawthorne(who hasn't done well there ironically).

So yeah if you just say the words without thinking about it it may sound crazy but there is a lot of reason behind it.

It's like Smith or Galette being called an OLB. They aren't covering guys more than they would as a DE and they play with their hand down more often than not. So despite being called OLBs they really are still DEs.

Cover LB and a true SS are basically the same thing. One guy is usually just a little smaller.

He basically already was playing in the spot, which is why I think it's crazy that people think that's crazy.
