I'm down for at least two LBs in this draft. I really want three- a edge pass rusher, a deluxe pass coverage LB, and an inside thumper.

Let's skip the 1st Rd edge rusher discussion. Plenty of threads have discussed that. Loomis generally gets at least a filler player in free agency for strong needs. Nada for Lofton and we know Hawthorne is journeyman at best. This might be one of the strongest positional needs drafting in the Payton era.

Who ya got? Who ya really hot on? Avoid who? Why?

Kendricks- I'm all in for him at #31. I wouldn't even be disappointed if they moved up a few spots to get him. He reminds me of Lavonte David. The Bucs moved up to get him in 2012. At what spot? Where the Saints would have been picking! They did some dastardly deed worse than cheating by pumping in crowd noise or deflating balls so had no 2nd Rd pick. (Ya prolly understand it still grates me bad).

He's the only one I rate that high. If falling, Gregory or Ray could be available at 31. Eli Harold is the only other 3-4 OLB I have in that range.

#44 is a ripe spot also- Some have McKinney near 1st Rd, not me. I love his game but he is a two down player at best IMO. He can look absolutely lost in space. Best case, he is Brandon Spikes. I prefer the 3 down types.

I have flip flopped with Perryman and Stephone Anthony. I'll take either at 44 and would spooge for them at 75 or 78.

I like Dawson but don't see him measuring up to a 44 pick. 3rd Rd, take him.

What I love on these guys is reading what gamers or ballers they are. Lofton was a technician but brought little fear to defenses. This LB core needs an infusion of fire. We had some life with Vilma and Fujita but it has been a dwindling flame since then.

How bout some later rounds names? Here are some they have visited with-

David Cobb RB Minn
Amarlo Herrera ILB GA
Martrell Spaight OLB ARK
Davis Tull OLB Chat
Geneo Grissom OLB OKLA
Jordan Hicks OLB TX

Sideline-to-sideline tackling machine. Relentless in pursuit and possesses natural instincts in taking correct angles to ball carrier. Ability to disengage and shed blocks. Smart, rarely flagged for penalty. Creates fumbles with ball swiping tackling technique. As a result, he will occasionally make a sloppy dive tackling attempt and miss. Lacks ideal speed scouts look for but makes up for it with his nose for the football.

Has been compared by his coaches to Brian Urlacher

nice story on David Mayo

Taiwan Jones is my favorite later rounds guy. Hopefully 5th Rd but might be gone in our 44 to 75 gap. I don't see McKinney rounds ahead of him talent wise.

Kendricks, Dawson or Anthony at 31 or 44. Then Taiwan Jones in 5th. Problem solved. Top 3-down LB and then probably the best run stopping LB in the draft later.

I'm hoping for Kendricks at 31 and Kikaha in the 3rd if they don't get an edge guy at 13.

If we don't have at least one ILB by 44 I will be furious.

forgot to list Taiwan Jones, one of my favorite picks later. I won't be disappointed if they decide to move up into the 4th Rd to get this guy. I really cannot see a lot of diff between him and McKinney. Both two down thumpers (at this point), one will cost a 2nd, the other a 5th (hopefully)

TAIWAN scouting report if ya dunno him...

STRENGTHS Outstanding size and durability. Card-carrying tough guy with take-on traits. Looks to own the middle of the field. Happy to strike a heavy blow on offensive linemen drifting to second level. Play strength to redirect off a block and leverage gap. Heat-seeking missile as A-gap blitzer, jolting centers and/or running backs while inverting pocket. Wrap-up finisher with unexpected closing speed for his size. Well-respected leader. Moved from outside to inside linebacker and made front adjustments during 2014 season.
WEAKNESSES Stiff, with limited change of direction in small spaces. Not very instinctive. Plays through a straw rather than with feel. Slow to see and trigger, struggling to beat offensive linemen over the top. Still learning pursuit angles from inside. Liability in man coverage and slow to drop with depth in zone. Below-average ball skills and came off field on passing downs.
DRAFT PROJECTION Round 4 or 5
NFL COMPARISON Nico Johnson
BOTTOM LINE Physically imposing "Hulk smash" linebacker with outstanding power and toughness but a lack of instincts essential to the position.

If we can somehow get Paul Dawson at 44 (I'd be okay with picking him at 31, as well) I'll be ecstatic. This dude is a machine and his "off the field issues" are nothing serious.

At 31 I'm targeting Kendricks. If he's off the board there I'm looking to trade down to a spot where I believe I can get Anthony. If those don't workout (or hell maybe even if they do as our LBs are that bad ha) I target Dawson from then on.

The thinkig about Kendricks is where does he fit in our D? He's best suited as a 4-3 OLB, just like Lavonte David. He's too light to play as a MLB IMO and would get washed out a lot. But he's great sideline to sideline and in coverage, no denying that. But I am worried about him playing on the inside at his size. So where does he fit in our D?

My favorite ILB is Stephon Anthony. He's explosive, great size, and can cover. He's a true MLB and can play on every down. He's who I want.

McKinney is the guy with the big time size and potential, but is a risky pick. I do love his versatility though. He can play on the edge if it doesn't work out for him at the MLB spot.

Would love to get Anthony in the 2nd.

I agree

Except I want us to take him at 31.

ETA: It would not surprise me if the Packers take him at 30. Im hoping both Kendricks and Anthony are there and they go Kendricks.

I'm a little less worried about a coverage LB than most because I think Vaccarro will handle that role in clear passing situations with Byrd and Bush defending the deep stuff. I also think that ILB is less important of a position than many others do. Our ILBs were terrible in 2013 and we still had a top 5 defense. Pressure up front + good coverage and tackling from the secondary is enough to be a good defense. We'll have some good options available in the third, but if we wait longer, I like Ryan from Michigan and Ramiik Wilson from UGA as 5th rounders if either is still available.
