Why did Detroit let him go? Other than Thanksgiving I don't watch that many Lions games but from what I know about the Lions is they absolutely can't run the ball. I know he'll be an upgrade at G for us, and he has "arse & mass", but I'm just curious why the Lions didn't bring him back?

Sometimes players just want out.

His best year was his rookie year. They had higher expectations and he has been nicked up. The new GM there values more athletic lineman and Warford is more powerful than fleet of foot. So all in all the new FO valued him, but saw him an inconsistent guard not in their mold who also had some injuries. They did offe him an extension and he rejected it. Our RG was pretty bad, so even if he is just an average guard, he will be an upgrade.

Combination of money and one of their Tackles was a free agent also.
They ponied up bigger money on the Tackle signing Wagner out of Baltimore and went with the slightly cheaper option of TJ Lang which wasn't a terrible replacment

Warford is from San Diego and went to college at Kentucky. Maybe he told the Lions that he would not re-sign with them. San Diego to Detroit is pretty drastic.
It's not worth it for a team to franchise a guard because they are paid as a Left Tackle.

He was a UDFA. The only "letting go" was not re-signing him. They couldn't compete with the Saints offer. They do have 2015 #28 overall pick guard Laken Tomlinson they prolly want to try and get onto the field. And it is the Lions.
Just thinking of the Lions makes me happy I'm a whodat. No more than a wild card loss since 1992. No championship since 1957.

It happens. We let Carl Nicks go for reasons other than his talent.

They offered him and extension last season and he turned it down. They wanted to keep him.

Just a reminder of how spoiled we have been since CSP and drew got here

ya, I was just responding if the by OP's "let him go" he thought they had cut him
I'm pretty excited about the prospects of the O line going from what I would call good overall towards the dominant type play we saw with Nicks and Jhari in his prime.

I think that Warford will play very well between Unger and Strief. I think that it may take a few games for them the gel but once they do, it's on.

Thanks for the answers. I guess "let him go" wasn't the best phrase. I should've said why didn't the Lions make a better effort to bring him back. I don't know the Lions cap situation but I can't think of too many people on that team that has heavy $ invested in them other than Stafford and maybe G Tate??

Side note I got to meet and talk to him for just a minute on Saturday at the Draft party.
Seemed like a pretty good dude...Said he was really happy to be in New Orleans and get to start a new chapter of his career.
