starting 4 up front play to their potential we could have a special defense.

Really dude? Do you even know what special is in relation to a defense?

The signing of one guy, cut by a really bad team, is gonna change that much?

I disagree. Rob Ryan was just an idiot who couldn't get a call in that his players could run to save his job.

Vaccaro, Anthony, Jordan, Kruger, Fairley, Breaux, Laurinaitis, and Ellerbee would all likely start or rotate heavily if they were on another team. That's 8 of 11. To address the other starters; Byrd could move up to the top group if healthy. Same for Rankins. Williams has skill but no experience. Which speaks to your point.

This starting D is light years better than last year. The question is always the depth. That is where we are lacking. The D doesn't have to be a top 10 unit. Just middle of the pack. I think that we have a chance for that

I agree, I feel more comfortable regarding the defense this year. Last season I had family members ask me during training camp how the team would fare.....my words were "the defense is still hot garbage, get ready for a long season".

I'm hoping that the offensive line issues will get cleaned up as they did during last season. If that occurs, and the defense can improve to middle of the pack.....it should be a good season

We have 3 new faces that will see significant playing time on the front 4, along with Davison and Edebali's potential growth as players.

Cam
Fairely
Rankins
Kruger
Edebali
Davison

You don't see any potential?

So with Kruger, Laurinitis and Fairley as part of the front 7 along with Rankins (when he gets well) and Anthony. There really should not be any more excuses . These are all pretty good pick ups.

Unless injury derails it, this is a legitimate case where "you have talent" on the DL. If Johnson really doesn't do anything with this, we need to can his arse so fast next offseason.

1st round Fairley - always been an above average disruptive pass rusher in terms of total sacks, pressures, and hits
1st round Rankins - highly rated pass rushing DT
1st round Jordan - double digit sacks in multi-years, one of the best DE in the league in "total package"
2nd round Kruger - double digit sacks 2 years ago, always been average-above average pass rusher
3rd round Jenkins - had a strong rookie year, but has been battling weight issues/underperforming
5th round Davison - solid end to the year, all reports showed he's been doing well this year
UDFA Edebali - 5 sacks last year while only playing ~20-30% of the snaps.

So if everything goes well this year we will have to try and resign Brees, Unger, Fairley, and Kruger... Frick. Good luck on that Mick.

We have 44mil in cap space next year not including the cuts below. Chances are, we weren't going to pay Fairley the 8-figure salary if he were to be a REALLY big contributor considering Rankins plays the same 3-tech. Unger will get around Mack money, Brees will still get the 25mil with a backloaded contract, and Kruger may or may not get another decent contract

Could still cut:
1. Byrd 11.7mil cap hit (saves 3.7mil) -- if he continues to suck or Bell takes a huge leap
2. Strief 5.1mil cap hit (saves 2.9mil) -- if Peat steps up or he sucks that bad we need to draft
3. Spiller 4.85mil cap hit (saves 2.35mil) -- if he doesn't return to form or Ingram/Lasco is a better combo
4. Ellerbe 3.2mil cap hit (saves 2.5mil) -- if injuries become chronic
5. Hill 2.6mil cap hit (saves 1.6mil) -- if he continues to suck, Fleener/Hooman/UDFA are good enough
6. Kelemete 1.55mil cap hit (saves 1.4mil) -- if he underperforms/don't need him anymore

Weird stat but Kruger was 5th in hurries last year. More than JJ watt and Von Miller. Cam Jordan was 11th. They may not get there but they make the qb have to move instead of standing there. That'll do the job for me. Make the qb have to move around.

Iirc he played a lot more than that. Somewhere between 60-75% iirc.

That said he played on a lot of run downs and some coverage too, so he wasn't a specialist.

Yeah too many people look at just sacks. It's bullshite. Look at combined pressure numbers and that will tell a more accurate story.

You always want a sack, but getting the QB off his spot often is also very desirable.

Pressure up the middle also helps the edge get home. We lacked that last year.

I agree - this front 7 looks really, really good on paper. Even with Rankins injured there are a lot of solid pieces. I definitely expect a major uptick from last year

Any one know how Kruger is against the run?

probably didn't grade high with CLE cause teams would get ahead of them and not have to pass as much.

I'm not saying stopping the run hasn't been a problem with the Saints D, but at least we can score so teams might have to throw more against us???

cause Cleveland's offense while he was there wasn't going to keep up with anyone.

just a game flow type of assumption I'm making.

good signing by the Saints I Think!

A potential pass rush. Ok.

But that's not what you said- you said special.

Sorry nothing is gonna be special about this D unless you are talking about short bus special.
