The Saints and most fans care.
Saints’ Hau’oli Kikaha suffers torn ACL

Saints defensive end Hau’oli Kikaha was the best pure pass rusher in last year’s draft,
Nick Underhill of the New Orleans Advocate reports that Kikaha suffered a torn ACL during practice this week.
Kikaha got off to a good start as a rookie last year, with four sacks and three forced fumbles in his first six games, although he cooled off in the second half of the season. He ultimately played in 58 percent of the Saints’ defensive snaps.
Now he’s out until 2017, in a big blow for the Saints, who were counting on Kikaha to develop into a big part of a rebuilt defense.

Are you fricking kidding me???

So how dependent are the Saints on a Brees extension before they have the capability to bring in a Hardy or Freeney?
Do you factor losing Kikahas salary as he goes to IR?

If we don't address this issue by signing freeney or Hardy....I just don't know anymore. Hardy is probably out of the question because of $$$
But we can do Freeney for 1 fricking year. More leadership too

Not at all. There's probably a dozen other players that could restructure to free up cap space right now. Also, Freeney and Hardy are probably going to get one season veteran minimum contracts + maybe an $80k signing bonus. That $80k might be all that would count against the cap in signing either of those players.

The situation sucks, but in terms of this season alone, Freeney could very well be an upgrade over Kikaha.

I thought everyone other than Brees who could have restructured did.

unger can still get an extension

Looking at the roster now, there are fewer restructure options than I assumed. It doesn't matter, though. Doesn't matter. We have $1.7m in cap space. Our 51st highest paid players is making the 2nd year vet minimum ($550k). A one year veteran minimum deal pays a player whatever their minimum salary is (in the case of Freeney, probably around $1.2m), but only counts against the cap as a 2nd year minimum player ($550k). Basically, if we sign Freeney at a 1 year vet min, whatever his signing bonus is (can't go over either $60k or $80k, I forget which) is the only cap hit.

Well i don't wish injury on anyone, but I'm not stressing over it like our season is lost, he's just 1 player, next man up. Its not like we had any type of pass rush with or without him in the lineup. Get over it

Toughen up, obviously you don't know anything about football.

Played 58 percent of a historically bad defense and we have fans acting like we lost Drew Brees. Smh, I guarantee that not 1 saints player is panicking over Kikaha

That was last year, when half his snaps were dropping into coverage. It won't make or break the season, but it could definitely have helped.
Him as a full time pass rusher could have been extremely useful on a team where only Jordan (maybe if you include Fairley, you get two) is a proven pass rusher. That and the guy had a knack for forcing fumbles, that is something a lot of players don't get taught.

No one on the team is a proven pass rusher besides Jordan. If we lost Jordan, thrn there's a reason to panic, but Kikaha is a second year player who drifted the second half of the season. Rankins will be a nice addition, but Fairly is known for taking plays off. What can Kikaka do that Richardson can't?

He drifted because of a nagging ankle injury and thus reduced his snap count afterwards. A fully healthy Kikaha could have done well.
Rankins will be a nice addition for potential, but completely unproven.
Fairley has proved in limited snaps he is a solid pass rusher who disrupts the pocket, even if he didn't finish and gets sacks last year. He proved the last couple of years he's trying to change his tone, NOBODY complained about his "slacking off" last year and he's arguably put a lot of effort into his weight/conditioning.
What can Kikaha do that Richardson can't? Well first off, tey play two completely different roles. Richardson is a DE/DT tweener who's primary job is playing the run while Kikaha is a DE/Jack who's primary job was to pass rush. Two different players and two different jobs.

Mike D said we will very likely make the call to Freeney

The difference between a somewhat pleasurable season with additional sacks, pressures, and hurries on defense, can deteriorate into a mixed bag of extremes with a pass rush lacking traction.
Imagine having two of the donuts on the right. Now, we have the donut on the left to offset and lessen the effect of the donut on the right. The potential was there to have bookend, tight feeling pressure on the QB. Now, not so much.

Obviously you have you're sold on Kikaka so you have no objectivity. We had 31 total sacks as a team last year and Jordan had 10 of those. Fairly has never been a 4 down player and has always taken plays off,if u think he's changed ok, put your money on Fairly. Rankins is unproven but his motor is without question one of the best that I've ever seen. Blaming Rob Ryan and Dennis Allen for lack of production and place no blame on the players is just obsurd. Jordan played in the same defense and ended up with 10 sacks. I didn't even like the draft pick, Kikaha is injury prone just like Romeus was in 2012. Why would you draft a player in the second round who already tore his acl twice? Kikaha is another Martez Wilson when healthy, not more, nothing less. No matter where Richardson or Edebali or Kikaka played near the line, on the edge or interior, nobody got it done with the exception of Jordan. Pass rush takes skill with hand movement but most of all it takes effort.
