Brandon Browner, Jarius Byrd, Jason David, Albert Connell, Wally Williams. I could go on and on.
The mistakes you make in free agency evaluation are
very expensive. I am not anti free agency . I am pro build through the draft.

Fair enough. Now name all the free agents we picked that ended up costing us a fortune and were disasters. I could easily fill up this page you are missing the point the writer was making.

Jason David, Bryd, Browner Don't mention pre Payton players

UGH.

The Saints are not the team I live and breathe for, so take this to heart.

Jarius Byrd was a luxury signing to be sure; HOWEVER, injuries are what ruined him. The guy was amazing in Buffallo, and on that second tier of FS in the league. Was he Earl Thomas III? OF COURSE NOT. There is NO ONE IN THE LEAGUE WHO IS EARL THOMAS III. Injuries happen, and they really suck, but the idea the entire front office should shut down and not offer free agency contracts is absurd.

How about Drew Brees, Darren Sharper, Darren Sproles, Keenan Lewis, and various others that contributed?

shite, every team has FA busts. New England had Adalius Thomas, Ocho Cinco, Albert Haynesworth, Joey Galloway, and a myriad of players that didn't make the cut. You're using flawed logic that every other team hits 100% on FA and big money contracts.

Go look at new England

People must have forgotten about their most prized FA flop in the last 10 years or so. Remember Adalius Thomas???

They go after bargain bin players. Look at their receiving Corp, gronk and Edelman were their only draft/long term products.

Guys like Danny amendola and dion Lewis were bargain players.

They rarely splurge. Sometimes it works (revis) and sometimes they don't (thomas)

For every Byrd, there's a Brees, Vilma, Lewis, Fairly, etc...

It's no different than the draft. It's all about good talent evaluation and fit.

I'd rather build through the draft as well, but in this era it works with a mixture of Free Agency as well.

Fujita, Sharper, Shanle, Greer, McCray, Hargrove, Goodwin, Brees, Moore, Gay, and Bell. These guys were all major contributors to that Super Bowl run in '09.

I agree with you, but I think the other factor is fit. There are two parts to scouting players (both existing pros for FA and the draft): the evaluation of the player, and the evaluation of the players fit within your scheme/your vision for him. I think the 2nd is a really underrated part of the entire process for both the draft and FA, and it's why so many players, and thus front offices/teams, fail. Byrd was a fantastic player who spent all of his time in Buffalo roaming the secondary as a single high and snatching balls. He had the luxury of a good, underrated front 7 and solid outside CBs. He was never really the "last line of defense" safety like we forced him to be here. That role is less suitable to his skillset.
