I would give up 11 to get him unless one of the big guys fall. Best case scenario for me, would be getting a DE and trading up to snag Mahomes. The kid has that "it" factor. I know this is a very unpopular opinion but it's who I like right now.

He's a huge boom or bust and many think it will take him a long time to overcome his bad habits. No way I would want the Saints taking him at 11. Not a huge fan.

I'm positive we could draft our favorite player at 11 (besides the obvious top 5, LF7, Adams types) and still get the best QB in the class. IF we pick the correct QB is a different conversation.,..

And I've heard differently
quote:

NFL Network's Mike Mayock was complimentary on the whole when it came to the pro day showing of Texas Tech QB Pat Mahomes. "The big-arm throws that most quarterbacks don't like to make: 20-yard comeback, cover-2, throw in between the corner and the safety -- he threw both of those beautifully," Mayock said, adding that "[t]he deep, outbreaking routes where you really got to drive it, he was outstanding." No surprise to us on that front, as Mahomes tosses perhaps the best deep ball in the entire 2017 class. Not all was sunshine and gumdrops, though, with Mayock noting that at times, Mahomes appeared to be focusing too much on technique and footwork, leading to a lack of drive on some of his 68 throws. The fact that Mahomes has shown a clear effort to improve his throwing technique and footwork probably matters more than the fact that those aspects of his game are not quite as developed yet. Mayock floats the Saints and Cardinals as two NFL outfits which (due to veteran starters Drew Brees and Carson Palmer) could serve as nice fits for the Texas Tech gunslinger.

quote:

Mahomes' pro day work is being met with good reviews for the most part, with NFL Network's Mike Mayock writing that the Texas Tech gunslinger was making "the big-arm throws that most quarterbacks don't like to make." Draft Analyst's Tony Pauline, meanwhile, notes that Mahomes " lined up under center and took snaps, something he rarely did in college. He handled the ball well and there were no bobbled snaps. His footwork looked much improved dropping into the pocket from under center." There is still work to be done honing his technique, but all indications point toward this pro day set of drills being one that should reassure teams of where the quarterback is in his development. He may well have sewn up a selection late on Day 1 with this work.

LINK

Sounds like he had a good Pro Day and showed scouts and teams that he's made a concerted effort to work on his flaws. He showed he is more than willing to be actually coached up and will work to improve. And you can't say that about all the guys with his skillset and coming from an air raid college offense.

I've been on the Mahomes train for a while now. No, he's not a perfect QB prospect by any means. He's impressionable and I think he could really flourish with Payton as his coach and learning from Brees. However, 11 is still too early for my taste. Id be thrilled to get him at 32, but don't think he will last til then.

Yeah, I might have to retract that. I read a write up about inaccuracy on a lot of his throws, but I can't find it anywhere.

If I had to guess right now, I'd say Mitch goes #6 to Jets, Watson #12 to Browns and Mahomes #13 to Cardinals.

I have been intrigued by his Brett Favre tendencies since he played against LSU in the bowl game. Not sure of the fit or his ability to read defenses, but he if we decided to draft a QB this year, he's the only one that I could get excited about.

I want Watson. Hopefully in the 2nd but he may not get that far.

Mahomes is the only QB in this draft that I wouldn't melt down if we took in the first couple rounds. Like the kids arm and moxie, think with a year or two Payton could make him into something.

That said, still a complicated situation. Drew wants to keep playing. If we draft a QB in the first now, it is almost a guarantee he will walk next offseason, especially since we basically cannot franchise tag him.

No its not... Drew has to realize its time for us to groom his replacement. Mahomes is a couple of years away from significant PT. He will get eaten alive if thrown out there immediately.

When did it become the norm to expect rookie QB to see PT in their first year? Serious question. B/c more and more rookies are getting early PT yet few have become "elite".

Mahomes can sit behind Drew and eventually be our star.

After him and that speedy WR torched us while PM got hit in the mouth every damn pass I have followed his career closely.

A 1st round pick needs to be an immediate contributor, not someone you hope to use 1 to 3 years down the road, unless the team is already Super Bowl contenders.

One draft guru compared his arm to Favre's as far as strength. Now many want to say he looks like Favre. He needs to work on his footwork and mechanics (fixable) but has to be taught how to read a defense and be broken of his habit of just throwing balls up for grabs. Some have hinted that he is not the smartest player. That is a fatal flaw regardless of any physical characteristics, if true.

Drew has been through this before, I just have a feeling he won't welcome the situation. Going into his twilight years, that kind of situation breeds a terrible end. If Brees had a bad game, (stupid) fans would be calling for Mahomes, not understanding he might not be ready. Lots of pressure with a first-round QB.

I agree with you that current NFL is too harsh on QBs (and honestly, rookies in general) when it comes to expecting immediate returns. Guys sometimes take time to develop, it doesn't mean they can't be worth the pick. Still, it creates a complicated situation.
