If that's indeed what the Saints are planning to do.

You don't bench someone who is essentially a rookie, especially when they've shown improvement from weeks 1 and 2. You let him grind it out and it's trial by fire to see if he can learn and actually play in this league.

Especially since you traded for him.

I don't have much faith in Doug Marrone or in the rest of the coaching staff to make good decisions here, but going with Hurst at LT is hardly an upgrade.

I agree. He needs to play. He has gotten better.

Maybe he has been a disaster at Run Blocking but coach him up

Good coaches will coach up a player

Bad coaches bench a player.

Make your own decision on what you think Marrone and Carmichael are

He’s played good in pass protection the last few weeks from I could tell. A complete turnaround from the first few weeks, so I don’t understand this.

This is the type of reasoning that has you extended players like Peat to massive deals (since he was a 1st round pick) and letting guys like Hendrickson walk because Peat has all of your money

Tells you a lot about DA.

The OC is in year 17 and doesn't know about motion or play action but we'll stick with him.

The rookie OT isn't an all-pro by week 6 so bench his arse.

Just dumb.

When Peat's contract was signed, Hendrickson had not yet had his monster season. He had 4.5 sacks in 2019 in 13 games, the most he had played. from 2017-2019 he played in 30 games, had 6.5 sacks and 30 tackles.

In 2020, after Peat was already signed and in Hendrickson's contract year, he played 15 games and had 13.5 sacks and 25 tackles. The question on this board prior to that year was can Hendrickson actually play a whole season without getting hurt?

The Peat contract was not a great move and did impact us keeping Hendrickson but it is not like it was glaringly apparent when it happened. I think most thought of the Peat contract as iffy but Hendrickson being able to stay healthy through the season and into the playoffs (if that happened) was a question mark at that time.

Hindsight is always 20/20.

I’ll say this again. This may not just be a performance issue but maybe one of defiance against the coaches. Meaning Penning isn’t actually listening to coaching and DA might be trying to send a message with his benching. I don’t agree with it but just my take.

Benching him now seems stupid especially when the offense played their best game and he looked solid.

If you said after tb? Sure why not. But now? Makes no sense

Very good numbers considering snap count. Just saying he played in x amount of games is misleading when he was just a rotational player at that time.

I'm with you. We'd be halting his progress.

We're trying to pump up someone's trade value. Whether it be Penning or Peat, I think we're going after a mid to top level guard at the trade deadline.

Is he going to play guard or is he completely benched?

I read it was Peat at LG and Hurst at LT. Moving him to guard is something I've only heard fans talk about.

This is such a broad statement. So you don't think any player should be benched for poor play? Good coaches can just magically make bad players good? Plenty of good coaches have benched players over the years.

I am not making an argument about our coaches or this situation either. In general, this is a ridiculous statement.

i have no idea why penning is struggling with run blocking, it was what he dominated at.

considering he was a run dominant force a move to guard made sense. we have no future at LG on the team and penning WAS struggling at pass pro. hearing this news about penning and ramczyk's career is on a spiral downward, ruiz and mccoy seemingly not quite living up to contracts, its a pretty depressing situation.

I have zero trust in this coaching staff to put guys in positions to excel.

It this what they are doing?

I thought Penning was making good strides in the last two games. He seemed to be the better of all the Olinelem most of the time.

Maybe he was missing more assignments than we could see on the TV or from the stands. Practice had Hurst and Peat on the left side. We will see the results soon enough.
