Our team was so bad that even the highlights looked like they were playing backyard football.

That was truly a horrible day and I have never forgiven Bum Phillips for trading Archie Manning. Archie Manning was nothing but pure class and a tremendous role model. He more than earned the love and admiration of the City of New Orleans and Saints fans. I think the answer to the OP is as simple as before Drew Brees came along there was no other QB in such regard as Archie Manning. Archie Manning was Mr. Saint. What's more telling is that about 99% of the bad things said about him here come from a bunch of pissed off LSU fans. Yeah, Archie Manning was my all time favorite Saint, probably still is if I give it some thought, though Drew and Deuce McCallister are right up there.

It was a different league back then.
Archie would have loved the protection they gave QB's today.
You were fair game back in those days and most QB's around the league got beat up without so much as a penalty being called.
That era, was when the NFL bounties were legal.
Players needed that extra pay because salaries were nowhere close to what they are now.
It really wasn't until the 80's when the TV money started flowing into the league.

Manning was traded for Leon Gray.

The saints traded a first round pick for Earl over two years later, when he was completely washed up.

In Archie's rookie season, the Saints went 4-8-2, which was their fewest losses in a season to that point. I thought we were really going somewhere.
Then the injuries started...

Just to point out the organization’s general shittiness, they drafted a future 1000 yard rusher (Jim Otis) and 1000 yard receiver (Ken Burrough) the year before Archie got there, and traded both of them away before Archie’s rookie season began. That could have been an even better rookie year.

good/great player, terrible team/coach....

could have been a Mount Rushmore type of player had he gone to a different team out of college...

I remember those years well- you just can't believe how inept the Saints were during Archie's tenure. He was loyal to the Saints, never critized the franchise, but he should have filed attempted murder charges against the front office for the shitty players that were on our O-line! You almost want to believe they tried to get Archie killed every time he attempted to pass! Sad that we will never know how good Archie could have been with even a decent franchise...

The most popular saying about Manning during that time period was that he was a franchise quarterback without a franchise. That pretty much sums it up.

To give you an idea of how much of a cluster F the Saints were under John Mecom...the Executive VP during much of Archie's playing days was Dick Gordon...a former Apollo astronaut.

Watching Archie get pummeled so badly on so many Sundays, you would never have convinced me that he'd live to see 70. For that alone, he deserves tremendous respect.

Archie was a GREAT college QB, but an average pro QB even though he played on bad teams with the Saints. Hard to judge.

Average QB at best. I watched him in college and the pros. Yes the Saints werent very good as a team and Manning was part of the team.
You are only as strong as your weakest link. Well in Mannings case he was average at best as a Pro so the Saints didnt have much hope with him leading the team.

Never was a fan of his sorry its my opinion. Peyton I thought was a good QB. May be one of the greats, not nearly the greatest though.

Then Peyton....not shaking drew brees hand after the superbowl in Miami.

Archie's behavior after his team lost to USM was even worse than that. They're kind of trashy, honestly, and I don't just throw that word around.

He was the only bright spot during his Saints years. Leading rusher more than once, I think, and much of it running for his life -- not good for your QB (or his passing stats). IMO he was an all-time college great, would have won the Heisman if he hadn't broken his arm. But I always felt sorry for what he had to put up with on the field as a Saint. And I admire how he stuck with and became a part of the city of NO during and after his playing days.

As a Saint, I supported Archie 100%. I've always been ambivalent toward Archie the private citizen.

Watched a clip of Patrice O'Neal the other day. He was wearing a manning jersey.

There is no doubt Drew Brees is a better quarterback but Archie will always be my favorite.

Drew would have never survived on the teams Archie played on
Conversely, it would have been incredible to see Archie play under the CSP system
