Griffin and Grayson both looked great.

They did, but:

1. It's ONE preseason game, let's slow our roll.
2. McCown faced Baltimore's 1st string, while Griffin and Grayson faced 2nd-4th stringers.
3. Payton will elect to keep McCown as the 2nd QB for his veteran presence and experience, if nothing else. While Griffin is entering his 3rd year, he's still pretty raw. It makes more sense to keep a vet back up, and a young project, rather than keeping two young projects as your backups.

Trade mccown to the jets. They need him. Get a defensive player anybody at this point. It would be and upgrade.

You can't get a true evaluation especially at QB until the games count for real. Hopefully he is the long term answer for Brees at the position like Rodgers was for the Packers. Don't get all worked up over any stats in the preseason especially in the late stages of game 1.

The bad thing is you might have to keep 3 Qb's on the roster at the expense of another position which is obvious the Saints need a lot of help.

I wonder if Collins would have been the pick over Peat had the issues not come up at draft time. Saints could not risk that pick and the agent told teams not to draft him but he could have been the replacement for Evans

i don't think there's any doubt that McCown's spot on the roster is gone after the preseason...

he would have to come out and be a Joe Montana clone from here out, and even that may not be enough... he's on the wrong side of 30, and we used a 3rd round pick on a QB... we aren't putting that pick on the PS... there's no question Grayson is gonna be on the active 53, it's just a matter of do we keep 3 QBs or not... and i don't think we do...

Did we keep 3 QBs last year? If not then this might be the first year.

It's been one preseason game. Care to place a ban bet on that?

There's 45 active, and 8 inactive every week

We're not cutting our 3rd round, project QB, and we're not going into the season with only a rookie backup. There will be 3 QBs on this roster.

No, just... no.

As long as Payton is here, the plan almost certainly is this: the timed development of Grayson is the same amount of time Brees remains viable as our QB, and McCown is an extremely valuable development tool- he's the mentor to Grayson who understands what Brees is doing, and explains it to Grayson. McCown is also capable of being Brees' sounding board, something Griffin is far too inexperienced to be.

Griffin isn't our future, you wouldn't have wasted a pick on a QB otherwise. He's being coached up as trade bait, and likely will be showcased this preseason. Somebody will likely want him enough to deal a player or pick rather than wait on the open market.

McCown a mentor to Grayson,I'll pass because he has sucked most of his career and mentor he is not..we need to cut ties and move on to better things..because we have better and younger Quarterbacks on the roster...

Ever see Bull Durham?

You don't have to be great to mentor a young, talented player, but you do need experience.

If Brees goes down, Griffin isn't leading us into the playoffs this year. So, you keep the more experienced scrub to help train the next big gun.

But neither is McCown...at least if Brees goes down the youth could gain that experience. There will always be a guy like McCown floating around.

Look, if Drew goes down God forbid, the next guy will do nothing but hand off the ball anyway.

The "Experience" That McCown is somewhat overrated seeing as how its been mostly bad. If we were to let a guy like Luke go we could always grab him back at a later day. I'm not sure Griffin would be available if we let him go. St. Louis tried to snatch him up last year and we put an end to that real quick.

Don't get me wrong, it's not like I think McCown is actually a good QB. As a fan, if Brees were to go down, I'd much rather see Griffin step in, than McCown.

But if you're planning on keeping Griffin, why in the hell do you waste a 3rd rd pick on another young QB, when there are plenty of holes on this team? I'm just trying to make sense of that.

I agree with that it doesnt make a heck of a lot of sense. I'm just not sure McCowns experience is of any use to us. At the very least if we get rid of Griffin maybe we can grab a later round pick for him. 5-6th maybe.

I think we could keep 3 QB's again though and give Mccown the boot. Yea, we dont have much in the experience department but the general consensus seems to be we are screwed anyway.

Griffin feels like he can be a very good backup in the league. So why not let that be for us. We can all agree that GG is the guy for our future, I just think we can have both guys with Griffin as out back up of the future more or less. I'm sure we will have to make a decision at some point and we could at least get a little value for Griffin.

This. Everyone needs to slow their roll on discrediting McCown so quickly. He also faced a lot of pressure because our two guards had subpar performances. Griffin & Grayson didn't deal with as much pressure as McCown did.

This garbage arse scab of a quarterback turned out pretty well as a mentor & developer of quarterbacks won't you say?

Because quarterback develop just like any other position, is crap shoot. Iron sharps iron. The more talent, you have on the roster at the position, the better the chances are you will have a quality starter post Brees by making them compete against each other.

Stop looking at the Grayson pick as waste. Even if he doesn't pan out down the road, so team will give us a pick for him in return just because of where he was drafted & him learning under Payton. It may not be a 3rd rounder but it could be a 4th or 5th if he continues to look decent in preseason.

The same scenario can be said about Griffin. Just last season, the Rams tried to claim him off the practice squad yet he chose to stick with the Saints. There will be interest from other teams if he continues to play well.

Payton has openly expressed that he follows closely what the Patriots do in terms of their roster. Look at the Mallett & Garoppolo picks for them. Mallett didn't pan out yet the Pats were able to get a pick in return from a QB hungry Texans team. It's still early on with Garoppolo but we'll see what he's made of once the season begins.

In the end, there will be some tough decisions to made at the position once preseason ends. I'm glad I'm not the one having to make it.
