seems to me that the past few seasons, we've had to restructure some contracts to make ends meet. do you see this as a trend developing? i mean sooner or later this has to catch up with us. can someone that knows more about this, help me out understanding it?

Government does it. I do it. Saints do it.

Unless we can somehow pull a Green Bay and draft a true heir to Brees(and even if we do), it's best to keep pushing the money until Brees retires, suck for one year while taking the hit, and then rebuild.

Keep in mind the goal is Super Bowls, not a money management award, even though they go hand in hand.

You can only work it year to year as football players tend to be unpredictable in performance and health.

Restructuring now while Brees is in house is for the best with a win now strategy. Once he is gone they will have a few down years and be strapped for cash.

Exactly right.

The Saints have never had a QB like Brees in its entire existence (and no, Archie isn't close).
We may never have anyone that equals his ability again; so, you better take your best shot. If you look at the salaries, the Saints can start cutting some major cap hit starting next year (Harper, Colston, and Jenkins) if they don't contribute.

also with the tv salary cap boost in a couple of years, there should be a decent cushion for us too.

Jenkins they can cut this year if they wanted. Harper would be wiser for next year. Colston would actually put a bigger hit on the cap if cut next year($2 mil more).

i wish the salary cap was restructured

it would be nice if teams could take their top paid player and only half to count 50% of the player's salary against the year's salary cap

but just for the top paid player

obviously i say this because we have one of the highest paid players in the league

but it would be nice

I wouldn't count on that.

Per a source with extensive knowledge of the design and implementation of the cap, the formula will experience a “smoothing” in the coming years, with no one year resulting in a dramatic leap. The thinking is that, if the cap shoots up dramatically from one year to the next, it won’t be fair to the players who signed a big contract in the year in which the cap was lower.
