13. New Orleans Saints – OG Brandon Scherff, Iowa

While the Saints don’t normally use first round picks on offensive linemen, the franchise needs to keep Drew Brees healthy as his career winds down. Scherff could step in from day one if either Ben Grubbs or Jahri Evans doesn’t return to New Orleans next season and also kick out and help at tackle if needed.

Would love this pick so much

I'm down with Scherff. He's probably the best offensive lineman in the draft.

Top 2 and likely won't be there at 13.

guards usually aren't taken all that high so he has a good chance of being there at our pick.

If we don't go OL in the first(and not seeing any stand outs at CB), I really hope we get Thompson. He's exactly what we lack at LB.

Goodies

I think he'll fall because of Ronnie Stanley, Andrus Peat, and Cedric Ogbuehi all being better suited to play LT based on their athleticism.

If Scherff is still on the board when the Saints pick and Gregory, Ray, and Williams are gone, I'd be sprinting to the podium.

Yeah, I like Shaq too. Interested to see which way the FO goes with this draft. After this turd of a season, they have to be thinking something a little different than what they've been doing.

Where would we have been had we lost in every round?

I'd be happy with that or the best defender

idk about Thompson as a LB. His combine numbers and measurements will be telling. Im not sure he has the size to play LB in the NFL

I think Vic Beasley fits in as a prototypical edge rusher in a 3-4 and would be a nice fit for us. He can do it all. He may go HAM at the combine and push into the top 10, I fear.

ETA- did not realize that mock had him at 6. So maybe he's already climbing as he hasnt been as high in the early mocks

The draft strategy should be interesting. We went with a bunch of big school " big name" guys which we almost never do and it's looked like a disaster so far. Maybe the scouts got lazy last year.

People said the same about Shazier and he seemed to be fitting in fine while healthy.

Plus we don't need a thumper(2 of those with Lofton and Hawthorne) or an edge rusher(2 of those with Galette and Edebali, plus Haralson and Humber if they return) at LB. We need someone who can cover. We've been needing someone who can cover. We got slaughtered over the middle and on dump off passes.

We haven't had one since Vilma was healthy in 2010 and you can see how much it affected the defense.

Shaq Thompson is almost about the same size as Lavonte David... I just don't see the Saints picking a LB in the 1st round.

they are allergic to it I think.

I posted in another thread that they haven't taken one in the first round since '95 with Mark Fields. It's definitely time(almost happened last year with Shazier and Mosley had either fallen a little more).

Edit:
And yeah people act like a sub 240 LB is unheard of. David is 5 lbs. heavier than Thompson and Thompson will undoubtedly add bulk. It's not like he'll stay 228 lbs. forever.

Shaq Thompson is roughly the same size as Lavonte David and every bit the athlete.

I think Thompson is big enough.

Anywho. The way this draft plays out specifically, Schreff, Collins, Kevin White, Thompson. Any of those guys would be perfect.

Let's not do Roman Haroer 2.0 cough cough I mean Collins. I'd be cool with the rest though. Put in B. McKinney from Mississippi State as well.

I want to see Shaq's ht and wt at the combine. He's noticsbly smaller than David to me. College numbers are often embellished a tad. I do like him though and if he comes in At 230+ I'm buying. Playing undersized in that conference is a different animal than the NFL, obviously
