Fairly & Rankins reduce edge rusher need?

Last year it appeared the edge rush wasn't an issue as much as the interior giving a good push up the middle. QB just escaped the pressure by stepping up bc our DT provided little penetration.

With a much strong interior presence, it appears the Saints are banking on elevated sack #s for the talented guys already on the squad (i.e. Jordan, Kikaha, and lesser extent Edibile (Sp) and Tull).

I agree. Having Kik rushing the passer instead of dropping into coverage will help as well.

We just need to be better.

Imagine having Reed when Fairley leaves after next year. Assuming Fairley does well and Reed would do well. Have to watch them play to find out.

Hopefully. But fairly has never lived up to expectations and Rankins is obviously unknown as an nfl player.

If they do both work out, I agree the edge should improve

Agreed. The interior presence was almost non existent.

Having a push up the middle will have a ripple effect on the edge guys. 2013 showed what a good interior push can do for our defense.

Another edge guy would have been nice, but between the run on them and the fact that an interior push was far more lacking and thus important to get, we made the right choice.

Kikaha needs to be a Kevin Greene type player.

You realize we get to sign FAs and draft new players next year, too, right?

I'm curious how the Saints feel about Tull and Williams as well. Personally I think them not going Rusher and CB means they feel good about them.

Conversely, these moves also say they don't have much faith in Byrd.

No we don't. This was the last year to do it. And we can't sign FAs after the draft either.

So we'll never get another DT or G. Game over.

I think I like Edabali & Kikaha, but damn would have been nice to solidify the edge too.

Fairley has 1.5 sacks in his last 23 games. fwiw.

But Fairley is a pretty good penetrator. If he can penetrate he disrupts the interior and shifts the QB over to the DEs. PFF likes him a lot.

And I think Tull and PJ Williams are definitely factors for sure.

Well corner is also mitigated by the fact we have Vaccaro and Wilson as well as the safety we drafted who can play man.

Williams coming along would further help our coverage schemes.

And we have Jordan, Richardson, Kikaha, and Edebali to rush the edge. Adding Tull would be that much better.

The interior push is what was severely lacking. Williams (at his age) and Jenkins just aren't pass rushers. We had to put Jordan and Richardson in the middle to generate any push.

Edit:
On Byrd, I think it's a combo of his lack of production and Vaccaro's lack of being a true safety. We needed another person to put back with Byrd so we aren't just single high or forcing Vaccaro into something he isn't good at.

Someone took my post as literal I guess? Can't blame them with the craziness going around. It seems like some people truly think that.

I'm not too optimistic about Fairley, given his production over the last two years.

Maybe since he's making less this year than last, he'll step up.

Probably the dude who is melting down because we didn't pick Reed

Reed would have been nice but what we got is hopefully better for our team in the long run.

You can find more guards and run stuffers later in the draft than legit skill positions. They are also cheaper and more easily had in FA (which is still going on) than legit skill position players.

Low Sacks for a DT doesn't equate to production. DT push equals sacks for edge rushers

don't forget new import from Canada Erik Harris also. Legit potential. Half as good as Breaux would be a big score.

And we haven't even seen Jethro's son Davis play at LB yet.

Kikaha, Edabali, Gwacham.

Add that to proven big time edge rusher Cam Jordan.

It's not like we have nothing.

Yeah well, he's barely gotten on the field so it's hard to do either one.

Do you really think GW let's him walk if he's getting all these "pressures"?

Maybe now that he sees the handwriting on the wall he'll step up.
