Do we cut Fleener today?

3.4 million of salary becomes guaranteed tomorrow. Gotta think we consider letting him go, or do we wait until June 1?

I thought he had a decent season until the injury. Without anyone else in place, I wouldn’t mind keeping him. I don’t think his salary is exorbitant, but I could be mistaken

They would probably do a Post June 1 cut
I can see the team looking to replace him but I doubt we outright cut him honestly. He's more valuable on the team than being a dead money asset.

I think we are 4th in the league on TE spend (according to Spotrac). I would cut him because the production is not there for the amount of money we spend.

THe $3.4 million is guaranteed already for injury. I do not know if he can claim he is still injured or not. If not, I would think they have to consider releasing him. His salary is $6.3 million this year and he has not justified his contract.

Yeah this one is sticky. Pretty sure he'd get cleared by now though, but he could try to fight it and find a doctor to claim he's still fricked up.
But they would definitely not keep him now to cut him June 1st and let him walk away with an extra $3.4 mil.
I'm not sure when you can start declaring guys a June 1st cut while cutting them sooner (you are allowed 2 such designations), but if they are allowed to do so now we could see that.
But we may just end up keeping him. He's played well (not up to his current salary though) and Hill is just so hit and miss (more miss).

I'm one of Fleener's biggest fanbois on here, but Tight Ends get injured so often nowadays - I would rather draft a young TE than risk a roster spot on a guy like Fleener who will literally be done with one more concussion. If he wants to keep playing he'll have to do it on a much lighter deal.

I go back and forth on it for the exact reason you linked.
Fleener was on pace for about 500 yards, which is a decent year for a TE. He also had 63% of all receiving yards by our TEs while playing the least amount of snaps out of the main 3.
On the other hand, 500 is low for the contract he got, but if we cut him without another guaranteed option in line we could be royally fricked at that position because Hill and Hooman are not the answer.
I'm leaning to keeping Fleener and perhaps cutting both of our other TEs, signing one in FA (mid tier pass catcher) and then drafting one in the third or fourth.

It's a weird situation because while his is way overpaid for his performance he was missed on the field and seemed to be coming into his own in the passing attack.

We can always re-sign him but I would think the Saints could get that type of production from a TE off the streets.
All in all this was a position of weakness all year and showed up on 3rd down.

Right
TE was an integral part of our offense until fleener arrived, both in the middle of the field and RZ. I would cite jimmy graham and most would say, oh jimmy graham is great, way better than fleener. Then I’d tell you 35 year old ben Watson went 74/825/6 as a 35 year old. You are bad if you can’t produce w breees and fleener has been just that. On a team with less pass catching options
All that said fleener could retire and I wouldn’t be surprised

Agreed on keeping him for this year.
He's underwhelmed this past year, but I think 3.2mil in savings and 4.8mil in dead space doesn't justify losing a starting caliber TE. You gain more next year when its 5.8mil in savings and 3.2mil in dead cap and its like the situation with Kikaha, is there really a better option for the cost (3.2mil)?
Would rather cut Hooman (1.6mil saved, 334k dead), sign a free agent (Burton), and draft one in the 3rd round (Fumagalli, Schultz, Gesicki, or Goedert?). We usually only keep 3 TEs IIRC, but nothing wrong with 4 for a year. We also groom the drafted TE, considering most TEs take time to develop, even 1st rounders. By 2019 we can afford to cut Fleener, Hill is a free agent, and then either pick another one up VIA FA, re-sign Hill, or spend a late draft. If all goes well, our TE corp in 2019 is: Burton, 2nd year player from 2018 Draft, and Hill with the only loss being Fleener.
What's worrisome is if we go into FA with Hill being the only carryover from the previous year. Worst case scenario what happens when Hill is your best option...that's worrisome

When you weigh our current cap landscape and things you can do to maximize it, that $3.2 becomes valuable. It’s a piece of the puzzle along w doing something w streif, restructuring morestwad etc
You cannot keep fleeener at the cost vs his production. He’s been below replacement level player by Saint TE standards paired w Brees. If anything he needs to take a pay cut
