Last year, the Saints traded Jimmy Graham, opting instead for a patchwork collection of tight ends. After one season of that, the Saints made a beeline for another potentially dominant pass-catching tight end.

On Wednesday, Saints quarterback Drew Brees explained what attracted the team to former Colts tight end Coby Fleener.

“We watched a lot of film on him last year, just because we played the AFC South,” Brees told reporters. “It felt like every time we turned on the film to watch an opponent that we were about to play, I’m watching Colts film or Fleener film. It was like, ‘Man, this guy has an uncanny ability to separate.’ He is always open. There’s always a place to throw the ball where he can get it. It gets you excited about a guy who has that type of range and that type of feel. Time on task with a guy like that, the more time we have in this offense where he can understand the nuances and understand what I am thinking, and where I want him to be, and when I want him to be there, and when and where the ball is going to be thrown — that’s when you really start cooking. That’s when you feel like a guy is uncoverable. I don’t care who is on him. He’s 6-5 or 6-6, there is a place where I can throw the ball where he can get it or nobody can.”

That’s exactly what they had with Graham, and the Saints may now have it again with Fleener. Assuming he can avoid dropping passes, something that has happened plenty of times in the past for him.

This gonna be a cause of 5 interceptions, Brees can be so overconfident sometimes.

Anyhow, glad to have Fleener and Brees on the roster

That was pretty much the one thing that kept me calm during the Graham trade was that it meant no more forcing it into triple coverage. With Cooks, Snead and Thomas, you won't have to worry too much w/ Fleener I imagine.

Again with the drop bullshite. That's already been proven false. He had all of 3 last year.

Breaking News...One of the greatest QBs of all time is very confident. Let's go to roving reporter Rod Izhard who's standing with the Saints' signal caller right now.

Well…Fleener is "always open" and so were our opponents last year most of the time.

Yea...you need to read the article

It's talking about how the film of him against other teams really stood out

I just hope Drew doesn't end up force-feeding him the way he kept forcing it to Jimmy Graham during his last couple of seasons here. That made our offense too one-dimensional amd predictable, and it allowed for more Int's and pass break-ups. Jimmy probably should have been sent out of town a year earlier.

Jimmy ran a lot of lazy routes. Fleener has the speed and runs good routes.

It might not matter how aggressive he is or how good his routes are if everyone knows the ball is going to him.

With Cooks, Thomas and Snead, that's not even going to be a problem.

I sure hope you're right. We've had a lot of options at receiver before with Colston, Kenny Stills, Robert Meachum, Lance Moore, etc., but we still saw passes go to Graham in spite of double and triple coverage.
