Wish those assholes from the NFLPA would quit delaying this garbage. Now we'll have to hear about this again when the defensive players get suspended.

Name one motherfricker that got hurt on an illegal hit. Players will start faking injuries and saying the other team must have a bounty on me. If the hit is legal then the league should shut the frick up.

One thing that's not clear to me (and no, I haven't read the report): Williams says SP told him to implement the program, yet Williams was doing this with other prior teams. Something doesn't "jive" here.

Goodells ego

Goodell was most likely the kid that got picked on and his arse kicked in school, then later in life became a boss and took his frustrations out on his minions.

Payton must be sick to his stomach right now. Could you imagine finding out you were losing 8 million dollars of "guaranteed" money? WOW!

Goodell says he will re-evaluate Gregg Williams at the end of this year. So what happens if he gets reinstated? The guy that was behind the program, and has been behind it in every NFL city he has stopped in, gets the same penalty as Coach Payton?

Think about that for a second.

He looks like Owen Wilson's older, nerdy brother.

That's not what Payton said. Payton asked Gregg to "make the defense nasty" and Gregg created the program himself.

Payton never asked to start the pay for performance program (bounty should only be used for deaths.)

I don't think the punishment is that severe, considering what Payton allowed to happen under his watch. I would be greatly surprised if Greg Williams is ever again allowed to be associated with the NFL in any way. I support Goodell's handling of this 100%. Depending on how much Payton and Loomis knew about the scheme, they too might deserve the same thing as Williams.

I think this a huge penalty overall. A super bowl winner needs, practically, an alignment of the planets to succeed with a championship season. Players and teams have a very limited window of opportunity to succeed at a championship level. These penalties are arguably heavy-handed AND might open anti-trust / monopoly litigation with the NFL.

In a sense, Goodell has effectively barred Payton and Williams from their livelihood for at least the duration of one year.

I would love to see Payton and the Saints sue. Between Irsay, Jones and Goodell, so many NFL executives and owners look like characters in the Sopranos.

Where's Tyler Durden when you need him? ...drop the house of NFL on Goodell's head.

By all accounts, Payton has been telling the NFL for several years now to frick off and he'll run the Saints the way he sees fit. IMO, the harshness of his punishment is due to how he handled the situation.

quote:

The violations were compounded by the failure of Coach Payton to supervise the players and coaches and his affirmative decision starting in 2010 (a) not to inquire into the facts concerning the pay-for-performance/bounty program even though he was aware of the league’s inquiries both in 2010 and 2012; (b) to falsely deny that the program existed; (c) to encourage the false denials by instructing assistants to “make sure our ducks are in a row;” and (d) to ignore instructions from the league office and club ownership to ensure that no such program existed.

quote:

When interviewed in 2012, Sean Payton claimed to be entirely unaware of the program, a claim contradicted by others. Further, prior to the Saints’ opening game in 2011, Coach Payton received an email from a close associate that stated in part, “PS Greg Williams put me down for $5000 on Rogers (sic).” When shown the email during the course of the investigation, Coach Payton stated that it referred to a “bounty” on Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

quote:

In early 2010, Mr. Loomis advised Coach Payton that the league office was investigating allegations concerning a bounty program. Coach Payton said that he met with his top two defensive assistants, Coach Williams and Coach Vitt, in advance of the interview with league investigators and told them, “Let’s make sure our ducks are in a row.” Remarkably, Coach Payton claimed that he never inquired of Coach Williams and Coach Vitt as to what happened in the interviews, never asked them if a “pay-for-performance” or bounty program was in fact in place, and never gave any instructions to discontinue such a program.

quote:

In January 2012, prior to the Saints’ first playoff game of the 2011 season, Coach Payton was advised by Mr. Loomis that the league office had reopened the investigation. Coach Payton made a cursory inquiry but took no action to ensure that any bounty program was discontinued.
