Hilliard was likely the top all purpose back in the league just ahead of Thurman Thomas. Teams stacked the box, knew he was getting the ball and he still produced.

Thurman Thomas had the benefit of a downfield passing game. Ronnie Lott said Hilliard was the hardest running back to tackle.
