Well, look at our record for the past 2 years when Drew became highest paid player in NFL and had by far the highest percentage of a team's salary cap.

That is fact.

It's not a fact unless he really wants another Superbowl. If he wants a salary that cripples the team and prevents them from building around him, he'll probably get it, and he deserves it if he can... but if he wants to win, then it IS a fact that he need to think about how he can get want he needs financially while also helping the team out.

or those who expect Drew to take a major cut

I don't see him taking much less than market value.

He's going to get another HUGE signing bonus if the Saints choose to extend him.

agree with you. The flip side of that coin is that for the past 2 years he has made more money than any player in the NFL. So I would look at it as both sides should be happy with the past and let us focus on what we need to do to win in the near future while Drew can still play at a high level. Fact of the matter is that Drew needs to extend/restructure or we won't have the money to build a team around him.

Denver, since 2012, has spent more cap space on Manning than we have on Brees and has a stocked roster.

The money was/is there, the front office pissed it away with bad FA signings and drafts

It's silly to blame Brees (not saying you're doing that)

yes. it is a fact that we had a record during those two years.

That the record was directly influenced by Drew Brees's specific cap number is opinion.

The team has undergone a few changes in the last couple years. Ireland had a great draft, we're working on rebuilding the oline, the defense has a nice crop of young talent now, we're getting a new DC, etc...

The Saints had a great run from 2006-2013. In my OPINION: In 2013 we tried to make a last push and gamble instead of rebuild. That failed, now we're rebuilding. We have cap room, we have rookies, and Brees being paid is not a major problem.

If you need further proof that Brees's 20 million dollars isnt the death of any franchise, here:

In just 2015:

Cam Newton is paid 12 million more dollars than him. They went 15-1 and earned a playoff berth.

Now before you say, well they're young and the team will one day regret that, Brees is old and hasnt earned his keep, etc...

Ben Roethlisberger is paid over 15 million more than Brees, and the Steelers went 10-6 and earned a playoff berth. The Steelers also did not qualify for the playoffs in 2012 or 2013 after winning the Superbowl in 2008 and going to the superbowl in 2010.

Eat it. Those are facts. Brees's contract isnt the issue. Stale position coaches, shitty assistant coaches, no pass rush, and the need for a sharp and motivating defensive coordinator are much more pressing issues.

What does being able to throw left handed have to do with anything?

Give Brees a 4 year 40 million extension. Convert this year to a signing bonus and save around 16 mil this year and have cap hits of 13.5 each of the next 4. Also fully guarantee his contract. Meaning he will earn all 40 million no matter what.

Kind of like how he said he would do whatever it takes to help us out last year.
