From Larry Holder's twitter account:

@DrewBrees would "absolutely" extend #Saints contract if asked

He'll extend, but he didnt say for mow much.

He could still want $20 mil a year, which won't really get the $30 mil number down much.

It would for this year

$20/year would be a reasonable rate. $18 would be a steal

Actually, that would depend on the signing bonus and how long his extension is for. With that said, I would anticipate him looking for about $15-17m for next year and at least 75% of the contract guaranteed.

Extension only provides a short term relief. What we need him to do is restructure for less.

$20 million/year puts him around #9 in the league.

An extension actually provides a lot more long term relief, especially if done for less.

A restructure without an extension is the definition of short term relief

Having gotten his big contract I'd expect him to be more amenable to a team friendly deal that allows management to help him win another ring.

I'm sure he would. It would be nice if he would work with us a little more than that though.

if you don't do the extension, you are still stuck with a $10M cap hit plus whatever his agreed upon salary will be for 2016 ($10M already paid to him as part of his bonuses).

Since he only has 1 year left on his contract, you can't restructure and spread that guaranteed portion out over any future years w/o an extension.

Maybe I need to clarify that by restructuring I meant that Drew needs to agree to take less money. And I don't mean a freaking million or two.

$20 million/year currently would put him at #9 overall in pay. % of cap would be less too.

We should be able to build around that.

Two million ($18/year) would put him at 15th in the NFL

For those who expect Drew to take a major cut, remember, he significantly outplayed his first Saints contract. In any case, I'm pretty sure Drew and his agent won't let the Saints forget.

I agree with you. The flip side of that coin is that for the past 2 years he has made more money than any player in the NFL. So I would look at it as both sides should be happy with the past and let us focus on what we need to do to win in the near future while Drew can still play at a high level. Fact of the matter is that Drew needs to extend/restructure or we won't have the money to build a team around him.
