We ran a total of 57 plays today. 44 pass and 13 runs. Not counting Kuhn's 1 yd td run and Cook's 4 yd reverse, we were averaging 4 yards a carry. The play calling today was absolutely atrocious. There is no fricking reason why Payton passed the ball 77 percent of the time today. Our run game has been on fire and Brees has shredded defenses because of that run game. Going empty on 3rd-1 on the first series set the tone for the rest of the game. In fact, the opening series had 3 straight pass plays. Our first run play in the second drive was a 7 yd run by Ingram.

Payton was a selfish prick to take the play calling duties away from Carmichael when the offense was functioning pretty well. Sean completely took our running game away today for no reason. It was a typical Sean Payton called game today and we lost because of it. While Brees did throw 3 picks today, Sean P predictable play calling was a contributing factor in those turnovers.

Bottom line is, Sean P needs to give the playbook back to Pete. This loss is on him.

Carmichael is a much better playcaller than Payton

I wonder what % of that 77% of passes were behind the LOS as well. They were very predictable with the swing passes and screens. Players didn't execute either. Ugly day. 7-9

Agreed. fricking full retard today. 12 carries is ridiculous. Run the fricking ball payton what the hell is wrong with this guy.

We are so much easier to defend when we are that one dimensional on offense. They can play the pass and we still try to pass it. We got murdered in TOP because we didn't run the ball at all.

Why did CSP take back the playcalling duties anyway?

Our offense was doing great.

And people want to complain "why doesn't Ingram have more 100 yard games then? That's why he sucks" are fricking ridiculous.

Even Adrian Peterson wouldn't have that many with how we abandon it.

I knew we were fricked when we failed to pick up 3rd and short on our first two drives. This offense relies on getting in a rhythm and that's something that Detroit did a great job of not letting us accomplish.

Kind of annoyed for many reasons.

Last week against a bottom dweller Sean is running up and down the sidelines fist bumping exuding all this emotion while running up the score on a team that can not defend itself.

A week later at home you come out "flat", "emotionally drained", against a good team at home.

Good teams dont get drained from doing what they were supposed to do the week before. Good teams show up. Have you ever heard the Pats saying sorry we were flat from beating the living dog shite out Rex Ryan last week.

Since we committed to the run we started winning or we put ourselves in position to win every single game this year. 3 and 1 opening drive Sean...WTF

When the announcers are saying the Lion's defense is backed up and keeping everything in front of them...you need to RUN the ball to pull everyone back into the box.

This was not a team loss. Sean just got out coached all game by Jim Caldwell.

To summarize a tweet I saw yesterday, CSP took over playcalling because he did it against the Rams and we scored 49.

That's because Carmichael devotes 100% of his time to offense, while Payton's attention is split amongst his other HC duties and crossfit. He's selfish and only wants to hear people talk about him calling the plays.

I really didn't care for Payton's demeanor yesterday and his press conference after the game was contrived.

Agreed. Gave off an air of being above criticism.

That kinda shows how arrogant Payton is.

His offense runs through the screen and the PA.
That works really, really well against super aggressive defenses like GW's Rams.
But it doesn't work against a defense like the Lions have.

He should have made adjustments.
Like, for example, handing the headset to Carmichael at halftime.

I agree. To me, the Saints took themselves out of the game with their play calling. The wide receivers were effectively neutralized for most of the game because they simply did not call plays for them.

So that means Cooks, Thomas, and Snead were all rendered practically useless. The Saints allowed the Lions to dictate to them what was going to be called. I wasn't aware that the Lions were so dominant with their pass defense that the Saints should shut down their own WR corps in fear of them. Detroit ranks 22nd among all teams in pass defense.

My big question: who would you trust to blow a game open on offense? Thomas, Cooks, and Snead or... Ingram, Hightower, Cadet, and Fleener?

I don't get the play calling yesterday. It was like taking a Ferrari and attaching a cement mixer to it.

I haven't looked at the play by play, but outside of the first series with the botched 3rd and 1 where we went empty. I don't remember us having a lot of running situations.

I know we didn't have the ball much and when we did we didn't sustain drives.

The 2nd series was run, run, run. 7,2 and no gain.
The 3rd series was again run, run, run and a 1st down. Then an incomplete on 1st put us behind the sticks and we went pass, pass.

The 4th drive went run, run 1st down and then had a holding on the next rush attempt which 1st and 20 caused us to pass. We kicked a FG.

The 5th drive was ending the half, so it was pass heavy. Again a FG.

So we were pretty balanced until we got behind in the 2nd half.

that was a big part of it I think. Detroit squeezed the clock and they did by mostly throwing too.

Stafford had 42 passing attempts.

for a team that never trailed that's a lot of throwing.. especially in a road game.

bottom line I think is that the offense just played flat as hell after pummeling the Rams the week before. That isn't the first time something like that has happened. I mean shite look at the point totals over the last few weeks. A lot of it has to do with matchups (I get that) but even still its an interesting pattern.

every time we've hit for 40 or over there is a big spike in point totals the next week.

In the early part of the year we did hit for 30 or more a bunch but that's mainly due to our defense crapping the bed and forcing a fast break tempo type of game.

I don't know what to expect this week @ Tampa but a 13 point clunker repeat from this past game is highly unlikely. Tampa has only given up 15 points the last 2 games at home (vs. Bears and Seahawks). I'd say we have more firepower than both of those offenses but if we start turning the ball over like we have in 3 of the last 4 games than I'd say forget about winning this week.
