A Look at Dennis Allen

Let's take a look at Dennis Allen's NFL Career:
Allen's first NFL gig came with the Atlanta Falcons in 2002 in which he was hired as the assistance defensive backfield coach. In 2001, the Falcons ranked 30th against the pass, and improved to 16th against in the pass in 2002, accumulating 24 interceptions. Over the last two years that allen was in Atlanta, Allen had duties of assisting in coaching the defensive backfield and the defensive line. In 2004, the Falcons lead the league with 48 sacks, and went on to notch 37 sacks in 2005.
Allen joined the Saints in Sean Payton's inaugural season, 2006. Allen was hired as assistance defensive line coach, helping to develop a unit that would go on to rack up 48.5 sacks, 10 forced fumbles, and 10 forced fumbles over 2006 and 2007.
In 2009, Allen lead a Saints secondary that lead the league with six interceptions returned for touchdowns, and 22 total interceptions on the season. Allen made significant contributions to a defense that led the way to two NFC Championship appearances, and a Super Bowl title in 2009, and paved the way for a 24-8 regular season record over 2009-2010. Under Allen in 2010, the Saints' secondary surrendered a league low 13 touchdown passes, and ranked fourth in pass defense and total defense, and top five rankings in 3rd down efficiency and opposing QB passer rating.
Allen was lured away by the Denver Broncos to serve as their Defensive coordinator for the 2011 season, once in which his defense helped the Broncos secure a AFC West title, an AFC wild card victory and AFC divisional round berth. The Broncos' 41 team sacks ranked highest since the 2000 season.
Many would day that Allen did not have much success in Oakland as the head coach, but after a closer look, his success simply did not translate into many wins. The Oakland defense was revamped and nine starters were replaced, but still Allen's defense improved, gathering 38 sacks in 2012, 13 more than 2011.
Overall, the guy has had tons of success as a defensive coach in the NFL. He is consistently good with defensive backfields, and seems to have had a positive influence on the young players in the Saints new backfield in 2015. The lack of pressure and poor concept in my opinion is the reason the Saints defense is so bad. The only concern now is that Allen's influence is already present, and he is a contribution to that terrible defensive play, and things will not change.

Will be just as terrible as Rob Ryan with what he has to work with.

He gets the bye week. Defense will be much improved and he'll get the credit

I hope not. I honestly feel bad for Ryan. Must have been a no-win situation for him with his replacement waiting right next to him. I hope he fails miserably so I can watch Payton find the next scapegoat to blame for the defensive woes. I'm sure Vitt, Johnson, McGriff will all still get passes. Next fall guy will be the coordinator of the coaching staff, or someone other than an actual positions coach.

Didn't realize Dennis Allen's agent posted on TD

Dennis Allen is in a win win right now. The defense can not get any worse so he is guaranteed to make improvements.
The striking thing about the skins game to me was the lack of care in body language on D. If seeing their DC shite-canned deservedly doesn't light a fire of any size underneath the D then it is easy to blame the personnel. Either way, Dennis Allen would have to royally shite the bed to not be successful in terms of improvement.

Denver 2011 (DC) - 20th overall defense, 24th in ppg, 18th in passing yards per game,
Oakland (HC)
2012 - 18th ypg, 28th ppg, 20th passing
2013 - 22nd ypg, 29th ppg, 28th passing

All 3, better than what we have right now..
Really looking back at the 2012 and 2014 free agency, we screwed ourselves hard by making one too many mistakes.

I'm fine with making the change now, it hurts nothing
I'm not fine with keeping him next year unless our D turns out amazing. I want a complete defensive overhaul

Oh no, I am cut to the bone by your rapier wit. How long did it take you to come up with that reply. Or did your goat tell you to say that?

quote:Why? How could you feel bad for Rob Ryan? Other than his great season with the Saints, he's largely been an average coordinator and he's been a far below coordinator with the Saints. His defenses inspire no confidence. They are not physical, they generate no pass rush and they are awful in 4 and 2 minute scenarios. They don't get off the field on 3rd downs and give up opening drive scores often.
I honestly feel bad for Ryan.
He has some high priced free agents and very high round draft picks on his defense and here we are...worst D in the league and he's on the streets. Where he belongs.
He was a fun mascot when things were working. They just didn't work for long.

The only mistake Payton made with Ryan was hiring him. He never should have been hired. Everybody has been happy to get rid of that fat arse. Dennis might not be the answer but this way it give Sean a trial run to see what he has with him.

I feel bad for him in the sense that he is being scapegoated, while Payton still keeps the same sunshine pumpers who have been around since 06' on staff. I feel bad because I feel Ryan isn't the the one to lay the entire blame on for the defense's poor performances. Why wasn't Vitt, Johnson, McGriff, et al shown the door with Ryan? If you can justify why the position coaches still have their arses in the chair on Airline Drive, then I will shut up.

This. We need a completely new defensive coaching staff

I feel bad for him just for the fact that he got fired
I was laid off about 4 months ago and know how it feels to be without a job.. And yes, I know that his financial situation may be a little different than mine
