Spags out and change to 3-4 altered the draft landscape significantly. The first round changes targets from Montgomery types to Jordan /Mingo types. It also greatly elevates the stock of top NTs Hankins and Jenkins. 3rd Rd sees some similar changes...

DEs Gholston Mich St, Devin Taylor SC, and Carradine FlaSt are now out as 4-3 guys from what I can gather. In as potential 3-4 OLBs are-

Michael Buchanan, Illinois

Brandon Jenkins, Florida St

Corey Lemonier, Auburn

I tend to think the #15 will be OLB over NT in how those pass rushers are coveted. That and there are some very good looking NTs that could be available in the 3rd Rd. Like...

Brandon Williams, Southern Missouri

Kwame Geathers, Georgia

Any kind of safety might be no surprise. Several attractive 3rd Rd possibilities-

Phillip Thomas, Fresno St
Shawn Williams, Georgia
Tony Jefferson, Oklahoma
Jonathan Cyprien, Florida International
I had Bacarri Rambo in this group but seems his stock is dropping below #75 range.

I'm going forward with the assumption that LT will be filled before the draft. Bushrod re-signed, another UDFA (some good ones anticipated) signed, or Brown is ready for duty.

Who else ya got?

Sean Porter LB Texas A&M. He fills the holes and is fast enough to get outside and contain the edge. Really smart football player with an even better head on his shoulders.

Gholston is 6'7 280, you don't see him fitting in as a five technique? With his lack of production this past year, the only good he really did was against the run. We need big bodies and I wouldn't take this one out of consideration.

I'm thinking either NT or S for the 3rd. Although I have hard time passing up a Porter if he's available.

Hopefully a Gaethers for the 3rd and then best available S for the 4th

Could but I see NO need with a rotation of Jordan, Hicks, and Bunkley

I think Porter and Hodges are super 3rd Rd hopes for 4-3 OLBs. Do they work as well in a 3-4 tho? Didn't Porter's play fall off when AM did a 3-4?

So they're going to play ever snap?

In 2011 they were still in the 3-4 and he was playing really well. Some hyperbolic scouts were comparing him to Von Miller. But last year, they switched to the 4-3 and he just got caught up in the scheme change, never made the adjustment. Still made plays, but he didn't seem natural.

no, but that is 3 solid DEs. I don't see a 1st Rder for depth. We need impact guys. Tom Johnson & Tyrunn Walker have to go DE if kept. Neither NT capable IMO. That's a lot of bodies at DE when we have no NT at all. And Tez & Juneyah are still a lot of hope and not proven commodities at OLB.

I think our biggest need is in the front seven. A 3-4 requires a stable of front seven players. I only see about 8 guys on the roster that look to be effective in that 3-4 front seven role. I'd like 3 front seven players in the draft and a few depth guys in free agency. Our first two picks have to be able to contribute right away.

good report, I knew there was sumpin up with the scheme changes there. Sounds like his stock might be lowered to our advantage then

I have him still in the possible even if unlikely category. I'd go 40% chance of being there. Combine will prolly set that outlook one way or the other.

Personally I love the combo of a 1st Rd Mingo or Jordan with a 3rd Rd Geathers or Williams. Fappable

Funny how it a blink of an eye we go from begging for quality 4-3 ends to having what appears to be 3-4 DE depth
Jordan Hicks Johnson Walker Bunkley(Smith reduced?)

truly the 3-4 idea was staring Payton in the face

Jordan as a 4-3 LDE very good, but as a 3-4 RDE he might be All Pro

Hicks is made for 3-4 LDE

Bunkley, Walker, & johnson all look to have higher 3-4 upside to me also

Then consider Tez & Juneyah. It's like these guys were miscast in a 4-3. I'd love to see a proven vet like Shaun Phillips added but again their upside looks much higher in a 3-4 vs 4-3 IMO

I see, where you're coming from. I guess I just see us trying Bunkley out there first. I wouldn't be opposed to Brandon Williams or Geathers in the third.

But

I really enjoyed watching Porter a few years ago, thought he could be something special. It makes it hard for me to see him available and not grab him. But, I understand we have multiple areas of need in this new system. Not to mention depth in the secondary.

I know we've mentioned safeties, but has anyone hashed out the idea of cutting Harper and allowing IAQ to be the other safety with Malcolm?

I was about to say, I remember all of this being the case

I specifically remember the comparisons to Von miller as well. He would be a great choice with the 3rd if he hangs around that long. Considering we're all hoping for pass rush OLB with our first, he could anchor the other side with Galette and Wilson subbing in/starting regularly

I'd love that but cannot see it being doable. Bumped the thread discussing this specifically.

put the GBN mock update in the stickied mock thread, love it, Dion Jordan #15 + Geathers #75

No one ever mentions Broughton. Another guy who should have quite a bit of potential at 3-4 DE. It is funny how we went from having very little DE depth to potentially cutting a couple to clear up some space.

good call, is kinda weird, giant DE pass rushing void to overflow of 3-4 DEs. Broughton looks the part fo sho

Depends on who else is available I guess. He fits the position well, but if there's a good looking DB or offensive tackle on the board that would likely be the pick.

good looking as great value always trumps. Nick Toon was that kinda pick to me. Much of an overlap type player being very similar to Colston. But they had him pegged high enough that by the 4th rd #122 they just couldn't pass on him.
