We're actually looking very good starting in 2017 & beyond imo. We have a few high/med draft picks & plenty of money in F.A. We're not nearly as far away as some people think.

These are a few of our best seasons from the recent past compared to our current roster.

2009 RB
RB - Pierre Thomas - UDFA
RB - Reggie Bush - Drafted 2006 pick 2
RB - Mike Bell - FA
FB - Heath Evans - FA

DT - Broderick Bunkley - FA
DT - John Jenkins - Drafted 2013 pick 82

2016 DL - I like our DT's...hopefully we can sign Fairley again in 2017(Glad we hit on him). We need to use a high draft on DE or sign a starter via F.A. Kikaha is still developing. We're just doing patchwork right now. Onyemata might be the answer in a few seasons...still very raw.

LB - Craig Robertson - FA
LB - James Laurinaitis - FA

S - Rafael Bush - FA

2016 DB - I actually like this group a lot a year from now. PJ Williams looked good against a respectable passing game. I like him and Delvin as starters. We'll probably cut Byrd next year and use the money saved to buy a F.A. Vaccaro is in a contract year. Hopefully we get him for a good price.
CB - Delvin Breaux - FA
CB - PJ Williams - Drafted 2015 pick 78
CB - DeVante Harris - UDFA
CB - Sterling Moore - FA
CB - Ken Crawley - UDFA
S - Jairus Byrd - FA
S - Kenny Vaccaro - Drafted 2013 pick 15
S - Roman Harper - Drafted 2006 pick 43
S - Vonn Bell - Drafted 2016 pick 61

Our offense will continue to roll in 2017 if we handle the right side of our OL properly. If Evans & Strief are done, then we need to hit on their replacements.

The defense looks decent on paper when everybody is healthy. Combine that with the big additions we are sure to make on defense and OL, 2017 looks very good imo.

Based on their track record how confident are you that the cap money will be spent wisely or that 30% of our draft picks will even be on the team?

Our last 2 drafts have been respectable & this years F.A. crop has been pretty good. I'm hoping for the best.

Nope and Porter was super underrated.

I hated that we let him walk (likely because GW wanted Robinson to start which was a mistake).

I wouldn't truly count McKinzie as part of the core group since he only balled out one game (which was incredible) and got cut not long after.

And I think Gay got hurt early also.

But yeah overall they just worked so well together.

Crazy to think Cam is on his 4th DC and the Saints on their 5th under Payton when Cam wasn't even here the first 5 years.

One thing I'm a little worried about his losing Vaccaro. That guy has turned into a stud I say we pay top dollar if we have to

He's locked in next year and we'll likely rework his deal next offseason if he's figured to be a part of long term plan

I'd hope so. 2017 is "deep playoff run or blow it up territory"

OT- my dad is a big Tracy Porter fan and whenever we reminisce about his super bowl interception I always think about this.... think about the players involved:

Manning - father has serious New Orleans roots
Reggie Wayne - New Orleans native, went to Ehret
Porter - born and raised in Port Allen

Coincidence??

Bonus:

Brett Favre (remember the guy who also threw it to porter to give us a chance to win the NFC?) - his favorite childhood team was also the saints

Alright, I'll put my foil away

No biggie. I don't know much about football schemes and such, that's why I come here. I just remember that small fact.

Great post breaux. We have a lot of young talent that will get better as this season goes on. 2 or 3 free agent splashes should make us a superbowl team.

Yeah we've missed on some free agent signings. But I think we've seen a commitment from Sean and Mickey to be smarter during free agency. I think we added some nice pieces in areas of need without spending a lot of money already (Fairley, Robertson, Kruger)

And our offense is seriously electric. Would not be surprised if Drew got his yardage record back this year.

Lots of exciting things to build on and we are very close

We are actually in year 2 of the rebuild. Next year we should winning.

We need to address the offensive line, add one more defensive line player, and add LBs. we have the rest of the pieces to make a run.
