that was a fun year.

started out kind of slow but then went on a big roll in the middle of the year.

it had been tough the previous years b/c ATL had gone to a Super Bowl in '98 and then the Rams won it in '99. Plus the 49ers pretty much had the division on lock for awhile before that.

so it was awesome that we finally got to the playoffs and knocked off the defending champion Rams.

won the game without the original starting QB Jeff Blake, Ricky Williams, and Joe Horn who got hurt early in the 1st half I think.

Aaron Brooks and Willie Jackson went HAM

and the D got some turnovers and QB sacks but it was Brian Milne making the fumble recovery to seal the win for the Saints and cut off a late rally attempt by STL.

That win at San Fran was so awesome. When Chad Morton fumbled crossing the goalline and they reviewed forever but the Saints got the call it was amazing. We never got the call against 49ers when I was growing up.

That's why that play still sticks out to this day. Saints were up 31 - 7 at one point and it was party time. Next thing that we knew, the Rams charge back and it's 31 - 28 and they're about to get the ball back. The Dome went from Mardi Gras to a funeral in the space of a few minutes. Suddenly, the Dome erupts again. Only Tracy Porter's SB44 pick six can match the emotion released in that moment.

That's why I can never be too hard on Aaron Brooks like the rest of the board.

He got us over the hump. He just played that year on instinct. He had an incredible year, and then Haslett and McCarthy ruined him by turning him into the something he just could not be.

Here's my story about that.

I was a boy scout and we were at Winter Camp, which is when you go to the summer camp but there's no watersports.

So, at camp, there's various campsites over a 1/2 mile squared.

We go the game on the radio at our campfire on a really cold night. Everyone is gathered around. The whole game plays out.

Then, we get to that kickoff.

Hakeem drops the ball! We freaked out and went berserk. The best part was, we could hear other people in other campsites far away doing the same thing at that moment!

Biggest problem was what they did to him in 2002. It was obvious to everyone except Haslett that AB was seriously hurt. The injury limited his effectiveness and caused the meltdown at the end of the year. Let the backup handle it and we make the playoffs. Then if we make a run and cause a QB controversy, AB is valuable trade bait.

Instead we leave him in there, he plays badly and gets booed, and his fragile psyche is ruined.

I was driving on the interstate with my brother when he dropped the ball. We went nuts. I look ahead and the truck in front of me was literally rocking going 70. We pulled next to it. They see us freaking out, we see them freaking out, we all know the reason, and then we just all freaked out together for a mile or so.

I'm lucky I didn't die

I just lol'ed thinking about that scenario.

Reminded me of when LSU won the CWS in 2000. Cresse gets the game winning hit and Theriot scores. Almost immediately we get a call at home and I answer it. It was a woman screaming "can you believe it, that was awesome, what a game, etc.". Of course I went along with it not knowing who it was but I didn't care. And then after about 15 seconds of us talking and celebrating she says, "wait this isn't (insert name) who is this? I guess I have the wrong number" So I was like "yep wrong number, oh well, Geaux Tigers". Still a funny memory to this day.

2000 Saints are still, to this day, one of my favorite of all time.

Just such an amazing surprise to have bottom of the barrel expectations following the Ditka debacle.

Haslett and Mueller just wiped the roster clean and brought in a to low risk, high potential guys and solid veterans. They overcame so many key injuries in the preseason and during the regular season to scratch out a division title and then upend the defending champs.

Damn that was a fun season.
