10 Greatest Saints Draft Picks: 1st Round

In general terms of player and career. I don't care what they traded to get the pick, or if his career was with another team.
10. CHUCK MUNCIE (1976): Had a good career with the Saints & Chargers, but drugs derailed his career. Saints first-ever 1,000 yard rusher in a season.
9. GEORGE ROGERS (1981): #1 overall pick. Averaged 1,000 yards a season for his 7 year career. Still holds the record for most rushing yards in a season as a Saint. #2 all time rusher in Saints history.
8. WES CHANDLER (1978): One of the best receivers of the early 80s. 2,801 receiving yards in just over 3 years with the Saints. 8,966 career receiving yards.
7. RICKY WILLIAMS (1999): 10,000 career rushing yards. 3,129 rushing yards in 38 career starts with Saints (2.4 seasons). Nobody who ever played for the Saints ran for more career yards, including Earl Campbell and Jimmy Taylor.
6. WAYNE MARTIN (1989): Most sacks as a Saint as a DE, 2nd all time behind Rickey Jackson.
5. STAN BROCK (1980): One of the best OL in Saints history. 13-year starter at LT. 28th all time in NFL history in starts.
4. VAUGHAN JOHNSON (1984--supplemental): 1/4 of the "Dome Patrol" linebacker corps. 2nd-best ILB/MLB in Saints history behind Sam Mills. 4-time Pro Bowler.
3. DEUCE McALLISTER (2001): One of the most-loved Saints of all time. Saints all-time leading rusher with 6,096 yards. 2nd in Saints history behind Marques Colston in career touchdowns.
2. ARCHIE MANNING (1971): Only Drew Brees has thrown for more yards as a Saint. 1978 NFC Player of the Year. 2-time Pro Bowler. One of the most popular Saints of all-time.
1. WILLIE ROAF (1993): One of two Saints in the HOF for what he did primarily as a Saint. 11 Pro Bowls. Three first team All-Pros. First-team all 1990s HOF Team. Not even debatable for #1.

I know a lot of people will argue that Ricky Williams shouldn't listed where he is, but I get it. Regardless of what the Saints did to get him, he was one of the best players to ever wear a Saints uniform. His numbers don't lie.
6-1 were given special treatment because they were known for their careers as a Saint.

how can george rogers average over 1,000 yards per season over 7 season but not rush for more than Deuce's 6,096 yards?

That is a surprising stat. I knew Ricky was up there with his total yards, just never really thought about how high he really is on the All-time rushing list. Wonder what could have been had he not taken those few years away from the league.

Because about 1/3 of it came in Washington.

Yeah I got that, and not just because of the haul we gave up for him but if the vast majority of what made the player great happened somewhere else it's doesn't make sense to call it a great pick by the Saints.

Why do people keep repeating this myth?
If you go back and look at all the players drafted with the picks traded, Williams is very well worth it. Someone did an article showing the best players selected within five picks of each pick, and the saints still came out OK.
It's sensationalized that the team traded "their entire draft for one player".

He's arguing the actual player, you're arguing the benefit to the team drafting him. Those 2 USUALLY go hand in hand, but there are occasional differences.
Think of a different team:
San Diego, greatest 2nd round draft picks.
If you're a Chargers fan, I don't know that Drew Brees is that big a deal. A couple decent years for the Chargers, who picked Rivers in the first round a couple of years into Brees' career, and let him go after an injury.
But if you're going by what Brees has done in his career, then he's going into the Hall of Fame with a number of records and a Super Bowl win. And the Chargers are the team that drafted him, thus he's one of San Diego's best 2nd rd draft picks ever.

Meh. Ricky only played about 2 1/2 seasons in a Saints uniform, and is 2nd all time behind George Rogers in career yards/game, and 8th all time in rushing yards.
For comparison's sake, he has 66 fewer rushing yards than Mark Ingram, but played in 24 fewer games. He has 616 fewer than our beloved Pierre Thomas in 67 fewer games. He could average 10 yards a game for FOUR SEASONS and still pass him up. On his pace, he would have had Deuce McAllister's numbers in 20 fewer games. And he only got better when he left New Orleans.
Ricky Williams made a positive contribution to the team and was a big part of the Saints first season with a playoff victory, even though he was injured.
For comparison's sake, he has 66 fewer rushing yards than Mark Ingram, but played in 24 fewer games. He has 616 fewer than our beloved Pierre Thomas in 67 fewer games. Ricky had like 70 more carries with the Saints than Ingram has had in his career.
