re: Zach Lowe’s (Pelicans) Dream: Too good to be true?

Zach Lowe talking more Pelicans in his annual Crazy Predictions article.

The Pelicans re-sign DeMarcus Cousins
Here's what I really wanted to predict: The Pelicans trade Cousins and filler to the Heat for Hassan Whiteside. That is my favorite fake trade in the league.
Think about it: If the Pelicans combust, they should get something for Cousins instead of letting him walk and pissing off Anthony Davis. Davis doesn't want to play center; Whiteside does!
For Miami, this is a pure talent play. Cousins is better and younger, with an untapped upside. If he ever gets his head on straight, Cousins is a top-10 player. You know who has a good record of coaxing alleged trouble personalities down the right path? The team that rescued Whiteside, and bought early on the Waiters Island waterfront!
The Heat are confident that once a player gets a taste of the way they do things (and of that South Beach life) they can entice him to stay. Miami's cap sheet is clogged through 2020; this might be their only way to land a star talent.
Alas, both teams swear up and down this won't happen. I almost predicted it anyway; Shea Serrano is always telling people to shoot their shot.
I'll settle for this: The Pellies hang around .500, miss the playoffs, shrug their shoulders, and max out Boogie. As of now, they won't have cap room to sign anyone else of consequence. Cousins would have them over a barrel the same way Jrue Holiday did.
And who else is lavishing Cousins with the max? At least half the league has (or claims to have) an ironclad "No Boogie" rule. The Lakers might take a shot on him as an Amar'e Stoudemire Memorial Free Agency Consolation Prize if they strike out on bigger names. The Mavs aren't afraid of gambling, and they'll need a center if Noel jets.
Beyond that, the market is murky.

I started to pick apart this article piece by piece but then realize it would take me an hour to comb through Lowe's impressive inconsistency and ignorance on this subject.

this is why i dont buy the "well, if things go bad, they can just trade Boogie at the deadline and get assets" Cousins got traded for a mediocre prospect and #10 with over a year left on his contract. the market isnt getting better with months left and a disastrous season in NO. the only possible exception i can think of is the Wiz deciding to go for Wall/Boogie.
this also is a big reason why they will probably be able to keep him this summer, unless things just go sideways (which is always in play with this team)
now getting Whiteside for be interesting. im not a big fan, but swapping him for Cousins is at least a decent return.

I doubt they'd give up Porter. Oubre + Gortat + future picks would probably be the offer which isn't great. Based on past history I think Demps would play this one out like Ryan Anderson only I think there's a chance Cousins resigns even if they miss the playoffs.

maybe.....luxury tax would be guaranteed with Beal, Porter, and Cousins all on max. and that's before Wall's extension kicks in.

yeah. to be honest, Porter + whatever for Cousins isn't that great either. Porter is a fine player, but i think much of his offensive production is predicated on Wall setting him up.
Gortat probably has to go in a Cousins trade, but maybe they work out a 3 team. or maybe the Pels can send out Hill

We do have to remember part of why that trade was such a scandal was because of how awful the Kings did at maximizing their return for Cousins. They didn't really shop him around, bid him against other teams, didn't even call teams that signaled afterwards they would of been very interested.
Their owner had/has a love affair with Buddy Hield. So while the rest of the league saw an interesting prospect, few think he can be more than a fringe all-star at best, while their owner thinks he is in the Steph Curry mold. So in their organization's mind(or at least the owner's) they did get decent value. They got Steph Curry lite. They got this guy that they value extremely highly.
I think you are right in that if it does blow up spectacularly due to performance issues(injuries to other key player could be a different story), it would be difficult to see teams giving up much for Cousins. Maybe a fringe contender willing to part with their likely late first rounders and some salary relief.

A few of those teams that wont give you trouble will give you trouble.

we have no idea what other offers were on the table. there were (and still are) plenty of quality reporters stating that many teams have no interest whatsoever in Cousins. i've posted it multiple times, but every Pels fan should read the Arnovitz piece on Cousins and SAC management.
did the Kings do an awesome job maximizing his value? of course not b/c Kings. could some teams have been bullshitting after the fact to appease their fan base? certainly. could Vlade have been doing the same thing by stating there were better offers after everyone mocked the trade? absolutely.
bottom line is this- we just saw Paul George/Jimmy Butler get awful returns. they are better than Cousins without any of the baggage and weren't dealt with 3 months left on their deals. the Pels arent going to trade Cousins unless Davis asks for it

I also think it's highly unlikely that Cousins leaves. Even if they are 41-41 and miss the playoffs, that's still
- More wins than he ever got in Sacramento
- He did it with his boys by his side instead of carrying the load himself and getting all the blame for losing
- They only need to fix one position to go from meh to really good.
Outside of him demanding a trade or S&T to Washington, where is he really going to join a better core than AD/Jrue/Rondo (he views Rondo as a positive)
