Coincidence that 6 out of the 16 teams that made the playoffs all had a top 10 defense? That's 37.5% of the teams in the playoffs.

you are looking at Points per GAME. Points per POSSESSION is the true test of a defense.

The Pelicans were awful in PPP last year but OK in PPG because we were slow as balls.

Look at the other stats:
Golden State was #1 in Opponents FG% at 42%
The Pelicans were #23 at 46%

Here are the stats per 100 possessions:
Golden State #1 at 98.2 pts
New Orleans #22 at 104.7pts

What is the point of saying that? So 63% did not?

Look I am not arguing with you about defense being very important. But the PPG stat is a joke.

You could have easily made your same point using a legit stat like defensive eff.

8 out of the top 10 teams ranked in Def Eff made the playoffs.

While 11 of the 16 teams that made the playoffs were in the top 16.

Edit: Pels were not one of those 16, just FYI.

Really surprised that the addition of Darren Erman has not been mentioned in this thread. I would think that adding him to coach the defense would itself be a reason to expect improvement.

Great point. I thought about saying this earlier. He will be a much bigger reason for defensive change than the pace increasing.

This was never a problem with GS last year.

Thank you so much for saying that. Kind of blows my mind that no one has mentioned him yet. If anyone has a worry about the defense just go look up our new "defensive coordinator", his past few coaching stops and their rank in defense at the end of the season. Then go read what steph curry and Klay Thompson had to say about him.

I think your worries will fade.

Go pels

It seems you're in here stomping on nerves. Don't fret, you make legitimate points.

Not really true, either. If you give up a lot of defensive rebounds, points per game goes up while points per possession go down.

Pels only have like 3 defensive calls now

We just need a defense on caliber with the Celtics(12th) and that'd be just fine. Anything better is gravy.

@OP are you seriously judging a team on their 1st preseason game?

Points per game against is a practically useless stat.

Of course I'm not judging off of a one game, I just think it could be a concern as the season progresses.

I'm also tired of reading ST and TR lol. Ready for some Pels and these kind of discussions help pass the time.

Defense is being simplified from Monty's complex system to a more straight-to-the point scheme based off 3 plays.

This is too analytical for you. What account did you forget to log into?

As far as I know, no one measures OREB as a new possession. Possessions end when the ball changes teams, not when shots are taken.

Should they include OReb as a new possession? Someone smarter than I can answer that. But at the moment, per possession stats are by far the best way we have to measure defense

The point is that the new regime has said they want to improve defensively. Fast pace =/= bad defense. So let's just wait and see.

Not disputing that at all. An issue with the idea that Points per Game is a better measure of a defense than Points per Possession.

I am confident in two predictions:

The 15/16 defense will give up more points per game this year than any NO team in the past several years.
The 15/16 defense will be better than any defense we've seen since Monty's first year.
