I'm not sure if I'm the only one who sees it but he is ruining AD. He's trying to turn him into a perimeter player. AD is a beast because of his finishing ability and being quicker than most bigs. He is also best at running pick n rolls. So what does Gentry try to do? He is turning AD into a jump shooter and is moving him further and further away from the rim and limits his pnr for more ball movements. AD hasnt looked like the same player since Gentry took over. He's just a big man now who has fallen in love with his jumper.

I agree with you and I hope this is the last year with gentry so we don't have to worry about that anymore

Actually, AD had his highest eFG% of his career (by far) from 16+ feet last year and would have had his most efficient year of all if he wasn't so terrible from 3-10 feet, where he dipped a substantial amount. Why? Oh, because his guards stunk and he had no space.

But dem are just da facts. Don't let facts get in the way of a good old fashion witch hunt!

For someone who is so say "losing interest in the NBA as they get older" and is "trying to find more productive and worthwhile things to do in their spare time" you sure do spend a lot of time thinking about it.

Those facts also says he's less effective for the Pelicans outside than inside with the same guards as the year before. We missed the playoffs if you haven't noticed and we've been hurt the last several years.

Davis will be back to his old self with decent guard play
his issue is on defense where he has not been the anchor we thought he could be
whether that's coaching or not i have no idea

I do know that if they are near last again in defense this year a change should be in order

I am losing interest in the NBA. As a student of philosophy, I never get tired of poorly constructed arguments and that is what I spend the most of my time commenting on. And there is no better place for poorly constructed arguments than sports message boards.

Either there or Trump supporters Facebook pages

That is true, there's definitely no shortage of poor arguments on here . So you're just interested in debating people more or less, I gotcha. We're actually in the same boat regarding the NBA. I loved it when I was younger and now I don't even watch it.

Because the season hasn't even started yet and we're hoping for the best. You know this board isn't pro Gentry. Hardly anyone here wanted him hired. "Ferry/Erman 2017" will become a thing around here if they start out too slow. This roster was built in a way that if the scheme/coaching is up to snuff they're going to be really bad.

i mean, people bitch about gentry all the time. some of it deserved, some not.

here's an nba.com article on the pels and specifically what Gentry brought last year.

LINK

a summary- they are doing the type of things that usually work, but the results were poor last year. was that on player quality, scheme, or both?

quote:

Overall, the Pelicans were one of only three teams (Chicago and Phoenix were the others) to regress by at least 2.0 points per 100 possessions in both offensive and defensive efficiency. Injuries hampered them for a third straight year, but it's hard to know if a faster pace works for this roster.

they've tried to remake the roster some this summer, but still obvious holes

Couple of interesting stats-

quote:

According to SportVU, the New Orleans defense allowed the league's highest field goal percentage (52.0 percent) and points per possession (1.23) on drives.

quote:

New Orleans has been a below-average defensive team for five straight years and is one of two teams (Sacramento is the other) that has ranked in the bottom 10 in defensive efficiency in each of the last four seasons.

Gentry is terrible and we were all wrong about him.

Everybody in the West is trying to play this way and we have less talent than most any team.

Because our biggest problem is Dell Demps. As long as Dell is running the show, Gentry is pretty irrelevant. We had a decent coach who brought a band of misfit toys to the playoffs only to be fired. New coach is brought in, but the toys are still mostly misfits.

I would suspect that he took a lot more shot from over 16 feet than in prior years. Even though his percentage may have been higher (as was his 3pt %), he traded higher percentage shots near the basket for those from 16 ft+. That is why his FG% overall was the worst of his career. Gentry should not be trying to transform his game into that of a stretch 4. He is much more effective close to the basket.

Last year wasn't the first time he played with shitty guards. Let not forget we had Rivers and Roberts running our offense.

You don't have to "suspect". All stats are readily available on the inter webs. Quite easy to find, actually

You will find, after your search, that his sharp decline in efficiency was due to his decline in the 3-10 foot area, not because of the increased jump shots

But don't take my word for it. Go look for yourself.

If you want to critique Gentry with regard to AD's efficiency, a legit criticism would be that he doesn't encourage offensive rebounds, where AD traditionally got a lot of easy points
