Why are we so upset about the end of the AD era?

A lot of Pelicans fans (including myself) have tried to construct trades in their heads for years with hopes that it will ultimately help convince AD to stay. Some of us were probably scared for the AD era to end. But how much joy has the 7 years of this era brought you? They have won a total of 5 playoff games.

This is not like Cleveland losing Lebron because Cleveland won a championship, won conference championships, and were contenders for years. The Pels, not so much.

Th most joy in my years of rooting for the Charlotte/ New Orleans Hornets and Pelicans were probably the Baron Davis and Mashburn years because they were competitive playoff teams year in and year out. I would prefer that era over the AD era.

Not saying this is all on AD but when I think about it, it is insane for me to be upset about an era ending that produced very little joy to me.

Time to move on to the next era of Pelicans basketball.

The NBA is ruined until this bullshite superteam era somehow ends.

NFL MLB NHL at least has some drama and small market teams who can compete

There are plenty of small market teams who have competed and are currently very competitive this year.

Because we are barely able to keep the team here now. Pelicans are only still in New Orleans because the NBA wanted it that way. Losing AD will kill attendance and make it easy to move the team elsewhere.

I think moving is the deep rooted fear. If you look for replacement cities you get back to former pro basketball cities. There's not much unexplored territory. that could save the pels for now.

I think this basically hits the nail.

There is a very real question of whether the team, under shifting ownership, after years of the franchise seemingly being neglected from upper corporate, is going to have the wherewithal(financial or other) to endure another rebuild or just sell off the bastard child in a peak market to some Seattle ownership group that will pay out the arse.

Or if they do decide to charge ahead, whether they will ever commit to the sort of organization wide front office restructuring, and corporate/franchise investments that have been long overdue for this team. That getting right will be absolutely critical if we want anything more than a repeat of the Demps era, where the margin for error with small markets is so much thinner.

The pelicans organization has had YEARS to construct a team around Anthony Davis. They have repeatedly failed year after year. This falls on the front office and dell demps. We had our shot. We fricking blew it. Time to move on. That’s the way the NBA is going. He is going to join a big team in a big market. We don’t have to like it but guess what. Reality.

I think before that though we are going to air out one last Hail Mary.

All the stars are clearly aligning for it.

I’d be shocked if this team looks recognizable by the all star break.

The obvious downside is that it’s doubtful you score that touchdown and in all likelihood your organization will be left in a worse position to execute a proper rebuild.

I think we need to start looking at the long term health of the franchise. We have had a GM who was more often than not willing to trade future assets for pieces to try and compete and for the most part, it hasn't worked out. Barring an unforeseen turnaround at this point, we need to start thinking long and hard about a new GM next year.

The doom and gloom of these threads is so premature. Regardless if it happens are not we don’t need to have a thread every other day whining about it. Kind of pathetic of y’all.

Also what strategy actually makes sense for this organization.

It has long been perplexing to me that we have pursued an organizational strategy that favors second and third contract players(argued because they are more proven) and clearing the decks of the cheap, drafted player pipelines most smaller organizations rely on to fill depth and groom cost controlled role players. Given we are a team that has both structural and artificial spending constraints(it was always widely reported we would not go deep into the luxury tax without being a sure fire championship team). The Demps model always seemed like a square peg problem.

I'm not saying the Demps method is even a bust, we are after all still in a position to get better, but I think any objective assessment is that it has been a less than optimal strategy and execution.

You show me a model that works and I will show you that same model failing 20 times

It's funny - teams are actually starting to agree with the Demos model more, it seems like. Dallas isn't tanking to keep their pick, they are trying to be good with Luka immediately, putting vets around him.

for me, more than city/market size limitations, its years (going back to Shinn) of poor leadership/ownership that has hurt them. it looks like it is starting to change, but it takes time.

even a team like the Knicks, with every built in advantage possible, hasn't been able to overcome neglectful, if not just plain bad, management.

it purposely leaves no margin for injuries. everyone has injury problems; they are hard to account for. and, sadly, the Pels have had biblically bad injury luck. but if they can't survive their 5th or 6th best player being out, then there are some serious questions about roster building.

have to see what Davis does. pass/fail exam comes this summer when Davis decides on supermax offer. still time to turn it around, but things look a little shaky right now.

The Pels kept Dell here too long. Now we'll be the next Supersonics.

Quite a bit actually. I love watching AD play, hes the best player this franchise has ever had and I'm in no hurry to see him go.

When exactly do you think that will be?

I love all these posts about AD leaving. Even in in game threads now the reasoning is that if the team isn't playing good its bc they all know AD is leaving and they are just going through the motions.

He may leave, he may not, but it's not happening soon but yet that's all anybody wants to talk about.

Let’s start the new era first off by firing Demps and promoting Danny Ferry

I'm sorry but NO WAY is AD the best player in franchise history. He might have the best numbers but anyone who watched all of CP3s tenure and all of ADs will know that CP3 was the superior player if the goal is to win games. He was as elite at his position and actually led other guys, made the better and had an alpha mentality.

Honestly that would annoy me as well.

Just do it right for once is all I ask of the Benson ownership.

You don't see these successful small market franchises succeeding because they engage in constant nepotism and just reach for the easiest, closest potential fix. Which has sort of been the tale of the Benson ownership. Doing what is easy/convenient over what is wise.

Ferry may be the guy, but let him earn it after the organization goes through a thorough hiring process that explores all avenues and possibilities.

If it comes to this and we part with Demps, I want to hear we went on to cast a wide net and speak with Sam Hinkie, reached out to Mike Zarren, brought in Justin Zanik for a sit down, and looked over Gersson Rosas' pitch with a number of respected and successful NBA consultants helping inform a larger rebuilding strategy. Do this shite right for once.
