Besides Anthony Davis. I still have faith in Quincy Pondexter so while my answer would be QP I'll give the nod to ETwaun Moore with Solomon Hill in a close 2nd, and Langston Galloway at #3.

At first wasn't really into this offseason but as I look at it closer, we have the pieces to potentially have a grit and grind Grizzlies type defense with a much more high paced run and gun style offense. This is what we expected last offseason but we didn't have the pieces to make it happen. Now we do.

Jrue Holiday is whenever he decides not to overplay and be the cause of easy rotational passing leading to an open shot.

AD isn't that great of a defender. He's still got a ways to go.

This is a popular narrative, but he's actually pretty good.

On Hill's conference call he said he knows he was brought in to be the teams top defender. I was watching some highlights of him and he's actually on the short/small side, like not the bigger compliment to QPon we need. But he seems to play big because he did as well as can be expected on LeBron in the highlights, so hopefully it works out.

I feel like he's much thicker than Qpon, did you get that same feeling?

Hill is only listed as 5 pounds heavier, but he does look thicker and more well muscled.

I'm still going Jrue on talent alone. He's proven to be effective against elite players in the past. I have a feeling if he brought that same energy and effort to the non-Harden/Westbrook/etc of the world, he'd be looked at as one of the games best defensive PGs.

FTR, I'm not faulting him for not getting up to guard Jose Calderon, he's also asked to do a lot on offense.

ETA: I think our best defensive individual player will end up being Moore or Hill next season with the possibility Galloway could sneak in there if injuries happen.

I think Jrue ability to not guard through screens really hurts him.

I mean.. Do we really have a "bad" defensive player on this team? I guess Tim Frazier might be the "worst" bc of his size. Ajinca is pretty bad, but most of our roster is full of defensive skill sets. Even Evans can be a good defender when he wants too.

Jrue was pretty meh on defense last season, but with more defensive talent around him he'll go back to his usual self.

Here's a great TBW article on Solo with some videos.
LINK

If he can get his 3pt shot up to ~36%, he's going to be really good for us. I know he shot the corner 3 well last season on limited attempts. Hope he keeps it up because between Jrue, AD, and maybe Hield drawing the attention on offense, he'll have quite a few open looks.

I think the problem could be bigger than that. One big skill he had that seemed to be missing last season was his ability to bump the ball handler without getting a foul called against him. Hopefully it was just not being in game shape with the rehab and restrictions, but I'm a little worried he lost enough of a step that he can't play that way any more.

I watched his highlights from last season he does look thicker than Qpon. Hill also looks kind of slow as well, but he is not, just one of those strange optical things. I think it is because he is not graceful.

You've identified one of the biggest keys to why the pels defense has been so bad, they can't aggressively defend without fouling. Ajinca is the worst offender clearly but most of the rotation players have had similar problems

outside of Davis the team has lacked and likely still lacks the athletic ability and IQ to play ermans defense

You don't have to be an amazing athlete to play defense. Its about forcing people into the spots you want and dictating position instead of the other way around. I think developing a reputation as a tough defender gets you leeway from officials. The Seahawks secondary effect.

an individual doesn't need to be a great athlete but if he's not he needs athletes behind him. If you can show me a team of below average athletes that plays good defense in the NBA I'll be shocked

athleticism and intelligence are the easiest ways to good defense

If hill can play like he did in the playoffs, it will undoubtedly be him
