I don't hate Gentry. I've said many times, its not his fault that Demps hired him when he shouldn't have been hired in the first place.

He's just a bad HC. There's simply no arguing against it and you've provided no argument against it.

He's coached 787 games as a HC and made the playoffs once. The end.

It is. Sorry.

Context is for when you've coached 200 games, maybe. The numbers are the numbers when you've coached almost 800.

What sample size would be enough for you?

1000 games?

2000?

10000?

My question for you is:

How many good coaches do you think there are?

Meaning, you give Spoelstra talent, they win. He has average or below avg talent, he loses. Just like Gentry. Just like Vogel. Just like Doc Rivers. Just like SVG. Just like Luke Walton.

How many coaches do you think are really good then if you are just talking wins and loses? Because it seems to me that you would call a coach good if he has good talent and bad if he doesn't

I count two, maybe three coaches, who transcend

i'll make it easy for you.

if you give a sniper a handgun and tell him to hit the target at 1000 yards, he's going to have a pretty shitty record. if you give him a sniper rifle, he's going to be deadly.

pelicans are putting their sniper rifle together. management willing, it will be ready for action by the fall

The only and I mean ONLY reason I liked any part of the Gentry hire was the hope of him being able to recruit former Warriors in free agency. Anyone who thought this guy was anything special and not some bum along for the ride in GS needs to wake up.

Not many.

None of this changes Gentry being a bad HC.

I don't think he is "bad" --- that analysis is far too simple. There are rosters he would be really great with. Where his system would be fantastic. Just like D'Antoni.

But this is not that roster. Conversely, there may be a coach who looks "bad" with the roster he currently has that would be great here.

There are 2-4 coaches that transcend. Every other coach is about the same, you just need to match the right system with the right roster

Read up on Ettore Messina. He would be the PERFECT coach with this roster

i could get behind that hire if mgmt let gentry go, but i do think gentry can run a slower tempo to suit this team like he has in the past.

He still had a brilliant half court orchestrater in Nash. Put Holiday on those teams and they are one and done

I know all about Ettore.

He was a guy I was interested in last time.

Can't see Boogie wanting to stay with the Pels if his 1.5 seasons here suck arse. I think you just go ahead and pull the trigger. JVG was my choice when we hired Gentry. He'll be my choice when we fire Gentry.

Yeah, I'm actually interested in seeing what kind of high low, big to big action Gentry can set up. If what MM said about the limits on the last coaching search are still in place, I don't see how there's any harm in giving Demps/Gentry one more year. If it works great, if it doesn't fire them both and bring in Cal or JVG. My preference is JVG but that'd have to get the thumbs up from AD/DC who I'm sure Cal would be lobbying hard.

Buy the team and it could happen!! I agree, I would like that too. I am just not optimistic it is an option on the table based on what I know happened two years ago

If Davis and Cousins are still on board with Gentry, you can't fire him at this time.

The earliest you can get rid of Gentry is after you sign Cousins to a long term deal.

He took over a team that had won 55 games or more 4 years in a row.
First half season, they win 46, miss the playoffs,
Next season they win 54, make conference finals.
That team included HOFer Steve Nash, future HOFer Grant Hill, Jason Richardson, who's better than everyone on this team but AD/DC, Amare Staudamire, who was just about as good as AD/DC.
They rounded out their team with young Robin Lopez and Channing Frye, hustler Lou Amundson, 6th man of the year award Barbosa, Jared Dudley, and Goran Dragic.

You want to argue about him never having talent like this as a head coach?

The next year they had a losing record, with basically the same team minus Amare/Richardson/Barbosa, but added Vince Carter/Gortat/Aaron Brooks. There were no injury issues.

The next year he has a .500 team, no playoffs again, with the same team again. I guess Amare was that good.

the next year, he loses Steve Nash, and they have their worst start in the history of the franchise and fire Gentry in January.

Your turn to show me where he's been a good coach.

He keeps saying "5 full seasons" as if it was a plus he got fired in the middle of a few seasons

You realize you just illustrated the point that a roster plays a huge part of a coach's success, yes?
