Memphis should blow it up and I wouldn't be surprised if they do.

I don't really understand why celtics fans just think they can get AD, who is about as untouchable as Lebron James. If we ever trade him, it will be with one year left on his deal, not now or next year.

Our fans link us to every player too. All fans do this shite

Look at it from their prospective - we have a perennial losing franchise which would perceivably cause an frustrated superstar. They are loaded with draft picks and a few attractive tradeable assets. They are the one team who could put together a package for AD

The number of people I have talked to IRL that think getting Wall is a possibility is funny.

Agreed. Obviously if Memphis trades gasol, that knocks them out.

Definitely, Simmons's view on the NBA is that small market teams serve almost as farm teams to the larger market teams, where the large market teams poach the small market team's best player just as they hit their prime.

he's right

not so sure about market size being the big deal recently. the Lakers, Knicks, Nets, and Sixers have been three of the worst teams in the league the past 5 years and haven't been able to sniff big time FA.

obviously market size helps and if they were competent, perhaps it would be a bigger advantage. but winning seems to be a bigger motive for player movement now, which makes some sense given rookie contract rules and shortening of contract length.

but it could be a momentary blip as payrolls around the league get tighter and tighter after the cap explosion

He did raise an interesting point that the new super max deal might hurt small market teams more than help.

it does

yup. very short-sighted rule

clearly the big markets are better positioned for sustainable success and are not so dependent on drafting a superstar and other roster building luck

boston just poached utah's superstar
not sure what better recent example is needed

wait till giannis comes up...

ignoring his bond w/ Stevens, if Hayward is most concerned with competing for titles, isnt Boston obviously the better choice than Utah? the more interesting question to me is: what would he do if the roles were reversed?

as for more recent examples, what about Chris Paul leaving LA to go to Houston? and you are conveniently waving away NYK, LAL, BKN, and PHI going 0-the last few years in getting big ticket FA.

long way off. but even there, that organization has some serious dysfunction right now. if its still the same song & dance in a few years, why should he want to play for them? same thing with Davis in NO. im not blaming stars from wanting to leave shitty organizations

zach lowe:

Loser (maybe): The Pellies, over a barrel We end with the league's most fascinating experiment -- and maybe its most volatile, with a svelte DeMarcus Cousins heading into the last year of his contract. In this icy point guard market, $25 million per season is just too much for Jrue Holiday, even if he had the Pelicans over a barrel given the paltry cap space -- about $12 million -- they'd have had to replace him.

Holiday is just 27, with limited mileage thanks to leg injuries the team is confident are behind him. Anthony Davis likes playing with Holiday, and the Pelicans need to be in the business of keeping Davis happy. The two sides could structure Holiday's deal so that it declines year-over-year or stays flat to ease the future cap burden. Holiday is a solid shooter, and a very good defender across multiple positions.

But if he doesn't make a jump, this deal is a cap-clogging problem. The Pelicans still don't have enough talent on the wing to space the floor for their twin towers, and it's unclear how they'll get it barring a return to health for long-lost Quincy Pondexter. The Cousins-Davis pairing could work in the right setting. They bring enough playmaking and shooting between them, and Davis can hang with most opposing power forwards on defense. They found a rhythm on offense after an ugly first half-dozen games. They have to hit that rhythm from Day 1, and it helps that Holiday will go through camp for the first time in three years. They cannot afford a slow start. The West is unforgiving -- as always.

not surprising...the consensus seems to be that the team COULD be good, or COULD be a disaster. nobody knows...

He was so SALTY when the Pels got Boogie. It was hilarious

He's been talking about it lately, getting Boogie near the trade deadline if it doesn't work out in New Orleans.
