Good article from David Fisher at TBW. In the 1st 21 games they were dead last in DRtg at 108.8, in the last 20 games they are 14th at 103.8.

Opponents were attacking the basket with reckless abandon for three straight seasons under Monty Williams and the lack of improvement surely assisted in his ouster last May.

It took some time for Darren Erman's defensive tenets to take hold, but New Orleans is beginning to roll up the red carpet defense. In the last 20 games, the Pelicans have allowed a similar shot selection to what the Memphis Grizzlies allowed last season. That's an amazing accomplishment considering where this defense started and the number of minus defenders in the rotation.

It's not all sunshine and roses though.

quote:

Unfortunately for New Orleans, the apparent cost of finally rolling up the red carpet is allowing open 3-point shots at unsustainable rates.

...There might be a defensive foundation to build on inside for once in the Crescent City. It's hard to see how the defense improves on the perimeter without some personnel changes.

are there any numbers on how AD individually has improved on D in the last 20 games? because it's going to start with him

i'm guessing a healthier Jrue is a factor too

Erman probably won't be here long if he keeps this up. I'm all for offering him the head coaching position in a year or 2 if he turns us into a top 10 defense and other teams try to pry him away.

Yep.

And what sucks most is that he couldn't shoot for shite when he played with us. Solid on defense, but christ he sucked on offense for us.

If you look at his career shooting percentages, he started off slow in his first two years but then improved a lot over the next few years. He lost it a little bit in his first stint with houston then he came to us and shot his lowest eFG% since his first two years. He leaves the Hornets and his eFG% shoots up nearly 10 fricking percent during his 2 year stay in Washington. His shooting dropped off a bit when he went back to Houston, but it's still 5% higher than it ever was when he was with us.

We basically got the worst version of Ariza.

Give us an actual NBA player at SF, and we might be good

...it was a pathetic group even before Q was out for the season

Yeah. I don't know how to eliminate that with so few long wings on the roster.

McNamar's look at 3/D options was interesting until he completely argues against his entire premise in the Casspi section.

He had a few great games in N.O. I really wish he would have been more consistent. Very good defender.
