Seems like center had been a giant question mark for this team for as long as I can remember. Assume for a minute that Asik is out, and assume he(not Asik) hits free agency. What do you experts think of making a run at signing Hassan Whiteside from Miami? He's a guy that seems to be very efficient around the basket on offense and defense, at least from my limited time seeing him.

I'll hang up and watch the downvotes roll in, thanks.

I don't think we want to be giving Whiteside a max deal, which is what it might take to get him.

AD is able to play enough minutes at center that you would only want to spend a bunch of money on one if he were someone like Marc Gasol. With Whiteside projected to possibly get max or near max money, he'd be a horrible waste of money.

I dont want Whiteside on this tea, but you definitely cannot do it without moving Asik. That is way too much money tied up in that position.

SO maybe the thought process is use our #1 on a quality replacement for Gordon (Unless we strike gold and win the Lotto). Try to move Ryno for a solid SF + pick, and move Asik for whatever and cruise the 2nd tier for a Center more to the Gentry system?

fwiw I didn't realize Whiteside was going to command Max. Nope, I agree deal breaker, especially finally getting out from under the albatross that was Gordon.

Whiteside is an athletic marvel, but he's still very immature as well as a selfish player.

Watch some of Miami's games, he will consistently try to pad his blocks and rebounds but leaves the team in bad positioning defensively. He's not disciplined at all

Yes, unless you win the lottery there should be several good guards available to put next to Jrue if we have a top 10 pick.

This is where it gets tricky, most teams would see Ryno as a rental so they'll probably not be willing to give up as much as what we feel he's worth. While I don't think resigning Ryno would be disastrous, I would rather turn him into a pick or wing prospect. I doubt we'd be able to get both, and then there's also the fact that the team will still be trying to make the playoffs and trading Ryno for future assets doesn't fit that goal.

I think we're going to be stuck with Asik at least one more year. You were never going to do much in FA this offseason anyway so his contract isn't a problem yet, and he's playing well enough now that he's gotten back into shape that he can fill that role. But long term yes, I think you can get away with a much cheaper option at center and dump Asik as soon as you need the cap space or can move him without losing an asset.

A young Tyson Chandler might work. Let's get to work on that . . . k?

Good question? dunno, I guess I was thinking a young center that can run and be active on the glass. (Without having to move AD under the basket)

We tried a second tier center without addressing SF, it ended horribly...

Not an Asik fan. Don't like his contract. With that said, he has been playing much better the last two weeks...fingers crossed that this continues...

To answer your original post, I would like a guy like Bismack Biyombo. Only 23, can run the floor, defensive centric. He isnt your lumbering 7' center.

Alas, Asik isnt going anywhere, so i dont think we can fit him into our plans

Seems like there's been a lot of mid to late 1st round gems lately. We can always draft and develop one. Shocker I know right? Who's the last guy not named Davis we drafted and developed? Thornton and Collison?

Tyler Zeller would probably fit well.

Not what you thought when we were signing Asik

ETA - you might not have been the one who said he was bad. I remember a thread where I suggested Bioyombo would give us 90% of Asik at 1/3 of the cost and was told I was wrong.
