Seems to be the best choice since he coached both Davis and DeMarcus. Question is how much money will it take to pry him out of Lexington.

Won't matter. We don't have an NBA roster and those aren't built over night.

Cal is not known for his X's and O's so he'd need good assistants, but he'd probably cost $10+ per year so there's not much money for assistants. The only way I hire Cal is if next year doesn't go as well as planned and AD and Cousins both say they'll resign/extend if the team hires Cal.

We have the 2 best players at their position, that is the hardest part of building an NBA roster.

If we intend on giving Demps the boot, might need to give him Coach/GM title. At this point, why not.

I honestly think the system run is way more important than in-game X and O's and adjustments. Gentry and Monty are both great coming out of timeouts and understand that part of the game, but they can't adjust their entire system for the talent (especially Gentry).

So while Cal may not be an expert, that also allows him to be pliable towards his talent.

There isn't a salary cap on coaches (unless I'm mistaken). We're going to have $300-400 million tied up in 3 players. This will be nothing in comparison, and Benson can't take it with him

He's shown a willingness to pay coaches.

You can't keep Gentry next year no matter what IMO

Seemed like that was not the case when we hired Gentry. From the stuff I saw it didn't seem like we wanted to give Him that kind of money the first time around.

Personally, I think they should shell out for a coach but it seems like they didnt want to and ended up with Gentry.

No, but

We know that average coaches are as good as their players. I wouldn't want to overpay so much for an average coach that it limited the players you could give him unless like I said that was the key to keeping AD/Cousins.

He asked for 6/50 last time. The 100 mil reports were bogus

While Cal would be great for AD and Boogie from a respect perspective, I'm still not certain he'd be the right guy for the job.

Maybe he learned from his last stint in the NBA. Granted it was with the Nets last time but a 72-112 record is still a 72-112 record. I'd rather swing for someone like Messina who will probably command less money and maybe infuse some new blood into the system. He's learned from the best in Pop the last few years. Pop disciples seem to be doing alright around the league.

I have to think that he learned something and has grown from that experience. Doc Rivers went 171-168 in Orlando before he went to Boston. Bill Belichick went 36-44 in Cleveland before he went to New England. Pete Carroll went 33-31 in the NFL before he went to Seattle. LSU hired Orgeron despite that disastrous stint at Ole Miss. So I'm not necessarily prepared to hold Calipari's time in New Jersey against him.

Cal lost his best player in a car wreck on the autobahn.
Right?

I prefer an nba coach. Cal is a great recruiter.

Petrovic died in 1993, Calipari started in New Jersey in 1996.

Talent wins games in the NBA along with mediocre or better game management. Calipari gives you a legitimate shot at talent with Cousins and Davis.

Hell, look at Bower. Dude should never be coaching NBA games, but he let 2 rookies go out there and play glorified street ball, and it was fun.

I'm not set on Cal, but barring some miraculous turnaround the final 22 games, it's looking less and less likely that Gentry is the answer here.

Last year was more disturbing than this year to me, but two in a row like this when Monty made the playoffs with practically the same roster as Gentry had last year doesn't bode well for Gentry.

There is absolutely no way 6/50 gets him. He makes 8 mil a season now with a ton a perks including a private jet anytimehe want it. I'd say 10/12 and probably closer to the 12 to get him. His son is enrolled at UK. Gonna cost to disrupt that.
