Small ball isn't a bad concept, but . . .

Does it have to be the primary strategy regardless of the opponent? Do we really want AD banging against the Dwight Howard, Tyson Chandler & Steven Adams types in the league? Seems like his offense is suffering & plugging in Asik for 10-12 min per game would help our rebounding & AD's offense/energy.

Disclaimer - I played high school ball but that's it, so I'm not pretending to be an expert

Thoughts?

I've been saying this. Small ball is fine, but I don't want ad banging these Dwight's, Drummonds, etc on the defensive end tiring out and then having to go up offensively against another one of their defenders.

Asik has shown he gets up vs Dwight and does his job well vs bigger centers.

Asik not playing against the Hawks is inexcusable.

I agree. He played very well the last time we played the Hawks and he tends to give Dwight fits.

I say we try to go get Nurkic or Cauley-Stein.

I hate Asik more than anyone, but I agree he should have played last night.
Last 5 times we played Howard he's scored 12,8,8,6,16.
Asik played when he scored the 8, 8 and 6, and he had single digit rebounds in those games as well. He had double doubles in the games Asik didnt' play.

Expected the DNP from Asik. Said before the game it'd be "dumb as frick" if he played zero minutes and Gentry doesn't disappoint.

Pelicans on the season

ORtg 29th
DRtg 6th
NetRtg 20th
Reb% 27th
DReb% 8th

Since the switch to small ball December 26th

ORtg 25th
DRtg 1st
NetRtg 6th
Reb% 26th
DReb% 12th

There's certainly some small sample size issues at play here, but I was really surprised to see the offense improve in that span because they've averaged 99.5 PPG compared to 102.1 for the season.

D Mo can be the missing piece that we need. It's not really small ball, it's just that we don't have an athletic center in Ajinca or Asik. He'll play tomorrow night and we'll see how it goes, I'm thinking we'll like the results if his back doesn't give him anymore issues.

AD's shot is off is why he's struggling. He has too much side spin and a lot of his shots will not fall because of that. Also, the trainer was aggressively working his right shoulder before the game, so there is probably something going on.

so that's what puzzles me w/ the Asik calls....this team has issues on offense and the answer is to....play Omer Asik more? that just seems counterintuitive. i get protecting Davis, i really do. and that makes sense. and maybe he is worn down from playing the 5, but i dont know if there is any evidence to support that.

i've seen people complain about Gentry never dictating the game to opponents...well this is it. they're playing their best guys and not wasting time on dead weight players. now there are complaints about Gentry needing to matchup with opponents...

i wish Pels would chill out and not overreact to every loss. this team is mediocre when healthy. there is no magic fix from Gentry or any other, better coach. this season needs a long view, not a day to day live in the moment lens.

that doesn't excuse dumb coaching, poor play or bad GM moves either.

I understand the concept of us dictating what we want to do, but if it's not necessarily working, then the matchups need to be tweaked.

It's a football analogy, but LSU could pound 95% of their opponents and wear them down. However, against Bama it doesn't work, yet Les kept trying for some reason.

If playing a small ball lineup doesn't force a team to bench their big men & they are out rebounding/defending/rim protecting us, then put in Asik for a few min.

did the Pels lose the last two b/c of rebounding, defense, or rim protecting? their offense was in the ditch. again, how does Omer Asik of all people help juice an offense?

now, a much more interesting question is why isn't Davis at the 5 putting the offense on turbo, like the first 4 years of his career? definitely something to think about and watch for.

also, to put ATL's small ball DREB % numbers into context. their rate on the season is 77.6%, good for 8th. their rate since going small is........77.6%

Hasn't AD's offense declined since moving to the 5 full time? Seems like there's a correlation there - exerting more energy on D has effected his O.

But hopefully it won't be an issue on this upcoming road trip since there arent any strong, banging Center types to face.

first 3 games, he was himself- 24ppg on 52%...last 2 20ppg on 36%

i would hesitate to say these last 2 games are BECAUSE of playing more 5. maybe there's a correlation, but i don't know if there's enough evidence to say there's causation at this point.

it's not like Cleveland has a behemoth he had to bang with. even if they weren't all in on small ball, he would have spent most of his time as a 5 v them. same thing w/ Boston tonight

but it is something to point out and monitor. over the next few weeks, if he continues to miss shots we've seen him make for a few years now, i think there's a much stronger case to be made
