A bit of a fluff interview from SL by SI. It's a week old but I don't think I've seen it posted yet.

TL;DR Buddy wants to put the ball in the hole really bad.

quote:

RM: What does the rest of the off-season look like for you?

BH: I want to take some time off but I'm pissed off so I can't take no time off. I don't know—just grinding. I'll probably go to the Bahamas and have one of the coaches come down there and work with me. That's probably it.

RM: If you did have that time off, what would you do? Where would you go?

BH: I like to travel. You can travel, but you're trying to get better. Take off two weeks and you can get out of shape. It's a rookie season so you wanna have that first impression. I'm gonna have that first impression like, okay, I belong in this league. I'm just gonna grind it out, man. Everybody say I need rest but I haven't made it yet. Yeah, I've got a rookie contract or whatever, but I haven't made it yet. I need to lock in on the things I need to fix and whenever I get time, whenever I feel comfortable with my game, then I can take a break. But for now, there's no days off.

On playing in Summer League and how he played:

quote:

I hate it. I just hate playing bad. I hate not playing the way I'm comfortable playing at. It just leaves a bad taste in your mouth. You're playing at a place you're not used to. And it's frustrating. I haven't played like this in like a year or so. Playing like this makes you mad, but it makes it more motivated because you know you're still not the best that you want to be.

If I'd have come out here and life had been easier out here for me, I might've been okay with it. I'm glad I did not play the best I've played because now I can go back and work on stuff I need to work on and say, 'Buddy, you need to fix this and fix that and you need to do better at this.' [Anthony Davis] is gonna open the floor for everybody, but I still need to find ways to put the ball in the hole. It's a fun challenge, though. As a competitor, you like challenges like that because that makes you who you is.

Another profile from SL from SBNation

Also, Limited Upside pod had the author, Tim Cato, on to discuss SL. Some good Hield discussion in there

The motivation to be better and not complacent is something you can't teach. And that is why I love him as a person and a player on our team. He will never be satisfied!

Buddy will be fine. He'll have far more space (if everyone's healthy) and be asked to do a lot less. His slashing and defending is underrated, too, because of how good he shot it last year.

I'm not sure what his ceiling is but he can definitely be an upgrade on Gordon, IMO, and certainly by year two.

quote:

RM: When you look forward, three or four years into your career, how do you think you'll be a different player than you are now?

BH: I feel I'll be a better facilitator, passing the ball. You see in summer league—I mean, there's not a lot of assists but I'm making plays for my teammates because I know the type of player that I am. Picking my poison, using my scoring threat, and making plays for my teammates. That's gonna be a big key for me. It's gonna be fun

Like hearing this as well.

Good luck for pels. He will maximize his potential. He is going to make it.

I like that he understands that if you take two weeks off, you have lost the touch and conditioning.

Conditioning will be paramount. A lot of rookies can't handle the 82 game grind. And either take a long time to get acclimated or start well then hit a wall.

Can't wait to see what he looks like playing with Jrue, AD, and all our new smarter ball players.

Also, I really, really, really hope he gets in contact with Steph Curry and learns more about his ball control.

Id just prefer him to pick the brain of someone like Frazier. A guy who is cerebral and plays within himself. Curry's handles are otherworldly. You can't expect him to even come close to that level.

I'm dead serious. What the hell can Curry teach Hield about ball control? Curry has the best handles in the league and to be honest is a questionable decision maker at times anyways. Let Hield learn from someone who he's going to be seeing in practice every day, who doesn't turn the ball over and is able to make decisions on the fly.

But sure, let Hield call Curry and become a taller version. Let Davis call Duncan and suddenly become the most cerebral PF in the league. Let Jrue call CP3 and let him teach him how to become such a dynamic player without relying on athleticism. Let Hill call Kawhi to figure out how he refined his game to be such an amazing two way player. I'm already expecting Moore to take all the things he learned from Jimmy Butler and play up to that level next year.

Well Frazier doesn't even have the best handles on the team. Frazier uses his speed over ball handling skills. Curry had bad handles coming out college and put in tons of work to get where he's at. If he want to learn from someone on this team Tyreke and True would be better. Tyreke is probably a top 10 ball handler and doesn't use speed but his skill and Jrue has more of a smoother handling ability.

There's a big difference between learning ball control and ball handling.

That's probably where our vast gap in understanding is on this topic. He said ball control.

OK I get you, Curry does have a loose control of the ball compared to someone like CP3 who looks like the ball is attached to him. I still think it would be better for Yield to get a better handle because he doesn't have the strength or quickness to create space from defender so a simply in and out dribble could do wonders for him.
