cap holds MUST be factored in unless rescinded

This is with regards to being over or under the salary cap. We left cap space behind last year. It's not that Dante's cap hold came off the books, it's that it just didn't matter with regard to the tax. All that mattered was if we signed him and for how much.

I'm just as confused as Hawk as to why there wasn't a hold at his vet minimum level being counted already

Big if here...but if everyone is healthy to start the year, and gels, that is a muuuuuccchhhhhh better team than the dogsh*t we trotted out there at the start of last year.

Not a fan of the Tim Frazier, E'Twaun Moore, Solomon Hill, AD and Omer Asik death lineup that lead us to an 0-8 start?

I think Cunningham will start over Miller.

Without a doubt.
You could probably make an easy argument that he should start over Solo.

If he can shoot from three like he did last year he should stay the starter after Hill gets back

The way you've phrased this I think you may be asking something slightly different, so I'll give 2 answers, the first expanding on BallHawks' question.

1) There was never not a hold.

In order to sign a player with cap space you have to renounce certain exceptions like the MLE and BAE. You also need the available cap space and when calculating that cap space, the cap holds of your other free agents matter because they take up cap space.

This year we operated above the cap so the concern was the tax line, not the salary cap. When calculating the tax:

quote:

Cap holds and exceptions are ignored.

LINK

What we COULD pay Cunningham wasn't relevant for tax and hard cap calculations so people were not including it. It didn't matter that Cunningham had a $4.5 million cap hold because we didn't have $4.5 million worth of tax room to use it all let alone go above it with Bird Rights. Our ability to pay more than the minimum came from the Bird Rights though.

2) "why there wasn't a hold at his vet minimum level"

A minimum hold makes me wonder if you're asking about the roster charge. You are required to have 12 players under contract. Whenever you go beneath 12 players you have to assume a rookie minimum salary in the empty roster slots. That is what is often referred to as a minimum hold. When you have 12 or more players you don't need to assume any salary in empty roster slots. The Pels had 14 players on the roster before today so there was no minimum hold in place.

I know a ton about MLB and NFL but I just can't fully understand the nuances of the NBA.

I like $$$ in this deal. Expected around 2.5 millions.

Love that this deal is one year.
As to 800k. Everybody expected him to get more. Up to 6-8 mil.
TBH it was not a blunder.
Misevaluation maybe.

Keith Smith tweeted that in his opinion Dell made kind of blunder that Pels gave him more than minimum. But he did not understand the situation.

Dante had 4 minimum offers with Pels having financial advantage.
Toronto, Minny and Milwaukee had a role for him but Solo injury changed everything...

I'm partial to the Nate Robinson, Eric Gordon, Cunningham, AD and Perkins line up from the 2015 opener.

Bench wasn't much better: Ish Smith, Ryan Anderson, Alonzo Gee and Ajinca.

Cunningham is a pretty serviceable player. I'm happy.

An opening day lineup of

Rondo
Jrue
Dante
AD
DC

With key reserves of

Ian Clark, Jordan Crawford, Etwaun Moore, Cheick Diallo, Darius Miller, Tony Allen (and Solo coming back around playoff time)

Is INFINITELY better than anything we have trotted out since the CP3 days.

While it may be a dumb thing to ask/bring up but the Sixers want to move Okafor. WIth their cap room and Asik being pretty much done would you make that call and see if we can move him if we have to take on Okafor as a backup big? Could then really do some interesting things with the roster long term.

Just spitballing. Know it won't happen but don't see a lot of takers out there for Okafor except maybe Chicago and even then...

only if it's straight up and they'd never do that
if dell burns the 1st to move asik I'll find him and tie him up in a pile of red ants
