Could be that. Withey may also have more suitors talking more money than we're willing to spend, hence letting him go without creating restrictions on our own future moves. I'm sure we'll hear something in the next 24 hours that gives the situation some clarity.

This move doesn't really create cap space though. The $5.5 million in cap space you get by letting Asik walk assumes no Withey/Babbitt/Ajinca/etc. We'll either hear about a longer than 1 year deal in the next few minutes (usually that's a simultaneous release though) or Demps is signing a center. I suppose it's also possible that the coaching staff decided to take a pass on Withey.

That's possible too. Even though we could match, if the offers are legit and we don't want to match, might as well cut bait now so we can make other arrangements like bringing Jason Smith back.

So Withey might be a throw in to a S&T of something else? We threw Withey + Toney Douglas for Jason Smith out in a thread the other day.
