The Pels, sources says, are eager to add Finch's offensive brainpower to the staff to spark the Anthony Davis/DeMarcus Cousins partnership.

Is this the guy that prototyped "Morey Ball" for Morey in the DLeague? It looks like he was with Houston for 5 of the last 6 years before going to Denver for 1 season.

Hmmmm. If so, then that would be an extremely solid and welcome addition.

From a Nuggets blog:

quote:

This may not seem like much but its actually a rather big blow to Denver. Finch is widely credited as being the mastermind behind the Nuggets highly successful offense which ranked 3rd overall in the league this season, trailing only the Golden State Warriors and the Houston Rockets. According to Stein, the Pelicans targeted Finch precisely for his abilities on the offensive end. After his success in creating an unconventional offense that ran through Nuggets big man Nikola Jokic, it’s understandable that the Pelicans would want to bring him in to try and figure out how to maximize the paring of DeMarcus Cousins and Anthony Davis.

Well damn. That is a really potentially solid move by Uncle Al.

I respect him bringing in an outside voice to change the Offense.

An interesting point from one of TBW writers responding to the Nuggets blogger:

quote:

Adam Mares? @Adam_Mares 35 minutes ago

Nuggets were #5 in ORTG and #1 since DEC 15 when Jokic became the starter. The style the Nuggets adopted on DEC 15 was brilliant, IMO.

quote:

Oleh Kosel Retweeted Adam Mares

Were #1 despite Jameer Nelson as starting PG for majority of time. Is hiring Finch to help Holiday, in the event he leaves or both?

Not only did the offense go off the charts when they decided to run it through Jokic, they did it with a back court that's mediocre to bad.

Yep, Gary Harris really came on late in the season for them as well.

Yeah, I kept looking at Denver's roster and was completely baffled as to how they kept winning? I mean they have some players but it is definitely nothing special. It really made me wonder.

I understand Jokic absolutely blew up, but I don't think he's as good as AD or Cousins, let alone both.

Jokic is a stud, id take him over cousins every day of the week. Everything from style of play to intangibles

This seems like a great hire

Is this guy a future head coach type talent? If so, this is even more shrewd on the Pels part.

Yeah, people keep saying you shouldn't run with Cousins but the Nuggets were 7th in Pace with an offense built around Jokic. The Pels were 9th in pace last year.

BallHawk, ESPN ran an article about him being a potential head coach for Houston before hiring DAntoni LINK

quote:

Chris Finch, Houston Rockets assistant coach For an NBA coach, it's one thing to talk yourself into playing faster, but quite another to be an evangelical on matters of pace and space. Finch has an edge, both to his personality and his conviction that an offensive basketball team needs to be constantly pressuring the defense. There's some Mike D'Antoni in him, an undying belief that conventional wisdom should be challenged and new ideas pursued at all costs. Asked for features they look for in candidates, NBA executives name diversity of experience more frequently with each passing year. Finch coached for a decade in Europe, where the Rockets found him while scanning the globe for undervalued sideline talent. In 2009, they installed him in Rio Grande Valley of the D-League, where he led the Vipers to the title his first season and another finals appearance in his second. He then joined the staff in Houston, where he has been a primary architect of the speedy, bombs-or-bunnies offense. The Rockets' decision in the offseason should be interesting. Will they be big-game hunters, retain J.B. Bickerstaff, or look at a value coach like Finch, who has the organization's ethos firmly in his DNA?

Hot take alert!

Gentry is going to retire at season's end when his contract is up and Finch will take over as head coach. Erman will stick around as the defensive guy.

Any chance this contributed to Loomis' decision of retaining Gentry?

Jokic is a superior passer to both guys. he's not the athletic or dominant force that Davis/Cousins are, but the dude gets shite done on offense.

this year- 21/13/6 per 36 on 58% from the floor. like others pointed out, once they started playing him a month or so into the season, the Nuggets were as good on offense as the Rockets and Warriors

now, his defense is well below Davis and even Cousins.

if they can turn the system into something revolving around Cousins/Davis and more 5 out/hi/low, they dont need a ball dominant pg. heavy PnR offense just doesnt make a ton of sense with two bigs like Davis/Cousins

It sounds like he's been on the bleeding edge of offensive philosophy for a while now. That's the kind of guy you want figuring out how to zig with Twin Towers while everyone else zags with small ball.
