So, theoretically, the Pels could have gambled and let AD hit RFA or FA in 2 years
RFA would have been next year, right? How many big time RFA's have left for another team? Butler signed the same 4+1 max deal AD did. Ditto Kawhi (though he may not even have the 5th year option). It may not have been worth the risk, but AD seems to legitimately like NOLA and that $7.5m could be pretty huge. That's what many folk's favorite realistic MLE FA Jae Crowder is averaging over the next 5 years.

Well we're likely signing cole/dc/FA so that 7.5 is a bit moot tbh.

I'd be surprised if any of them are on our team next season (I expect our FA signing will be a one year deal). Maybe Cole will get extended. Regardless, we'll be well under the cap unless:
a) we extend both EG and Ryno after typical seasons
b) we extend one or both after surprisingly great seasons.
If neither of those happens, then the extra $7.5m would have been huge.

Cole I think is highly valued so at least he'll be back imho.
Tyreke is likely gone next season and who knows what we get back for EG/Ryno. Those assets could land us something else.

I hope Cole is here to stay. Things changed once he was brought in last season and he seems to enjoy it here

When you have somebody with the talent of AD you lock him up the first chance you get.

I agree. Especially for a franchise, like the Pels, that is trying to build up its reputation across the league.
The Spurs waited with Leonard b/c of the cap hold. But they're also the SPURS and have built up that sort of equity.
