So TigerinATL was kind enough to post this in the Asik thread, courtesy of Mason at BSS:

As you can see, with 9 players, we are at a little over 73 mill. The tax line is 83. It is VERY unlikely we will want to pay the tax at this time, and there are all kinds of penalties for repeaters. So we are not crossing that line. Also keep in mind that the number for the tax line only matters at the END of the season, so we could get under at that time in some ways.

However, if we had the full MLE and full BAE, we are at 11 players and only about 1.5 million under the tax line. We probably want to have 13 players on the roster.

So its going to get dicey.

The only thing I can think of is we split the MLE between two players, the BAE to one player, getting us to 12, and then add a minimum player (rookie? vet?) to get us to 13ish.

There's also the possibility we add some salary that is non-guaranteed so we can cut them before the season ends? Don't know.

Its going to be really interesting now that we have a good idea of what our salary situation is.

Those, like me, who were hoping to use the FULL MLE on a wing look to be shite out of luck.

One new thing I learned yesterday is for tax purposes, a minimum contract only counts as a 2nd year minimum, $947k. So you can use that figure for adding to the roster rather than the $1.2 if we resigned Babbitt or Cunningham. As close as we are, that could make a difference.

Also, and maybe I'm more intrigued than I should be by He Tianju, but he's a Chinese All Star, so I doubt you get him with a minimum deal if he ends up being worthy of a roster spot, he'll probably be more than $1 million. If he makes it I'd almost expect him to take Babbitt's roster spot because of how tight things are.

Posted this in Asik thread:

Guessing Cole gets a part of the MLE ($3.5m) and Cunningham the BAE. Vet min on SF and backup C and He makes team. Gives us 13. Does that work to stay under tax?

Cole is already figured into that number I think so we could just let him play the season out.

We should have Bird Rights to resign Cole with if we do anything above his QO.

Sorry misread it. So we can use part of MLE to get Tucker?

The MLE is for signing, not trading. PJ makes $5.5, that means we need to send out at least $3.6 million. Toney Douglas only counts for $1.2, so they'd have to be ok with taking on both Withey and Babbit and only getting about $2 million in cap space.

Normally yes, but I thought you could use it in trades to take on the salary? Like we basically would be resciniding the use of it to a free agent and are applying to a trade? Correct me if I am wrong on this please!

The MLE and BAE are just for signing FAs, and we wouldn't need it to sign Withey and Babbit to minimum deals. Also, you can S&T your own player, but you can't S&T someone off the street.

We'd need to get a third team involved to take the guaranteed contracts from us involved.

We have Tyreke and Jrue so why not use Cole with Douglas' contract for a sign and trade somewhere to get Tucker?

Then we can use MLE space to find a vet backup PG (easier than trying to find a wing of Tucker's quality).

CBA Faq says it's explicitly forbidden.

quote:

The player cannot be signed using the Non-Taxpayer Mid-Level exception, the Taxpayer Mid-Level exception, or any exception that cannot be used to offer a three-year contract (see question number 25).

I'm getting a headache trying to think of how this team can get better, using the exceptions we have, without going over the tax, and without drastically hurting next year's FA.

To me, the ideal situation is a trade that converts Ryno's salary into a wing that can shoot the 3 but also guard 3s, with short term salary.

And then adding multiple players (including a PF and another wing) with the MLE, BAE and minimums.

Suns are dumping deals to make a run at LMA. Anyway the Pels could swing Tucker in a dump?

I don't see how. Unless we are sending Ryno or other players to a 3rd team, with maybe Douglas going to Suns and being cut.

That's what Ball Hawk is trying to work out. We only need to send out $3.6 to get him, so a package of Douglas, Withey and Babbitt should be enough with a 3rd team. You also could build something around Cole if you need more player value to make something happen.
