Per Stein

League sources say Minnesota, in the wake of the Jimmy Butler deal, remains intent on trading Ricky Rubio as it searches for more shooting.

Wonder if they'd consider some type of sign and trade of Jrue for Rubio.

Would you do Jrue for Rubio & Bjelica?

I'd hope we don't need to tie a pick to it

In yalls opinion, why doesn't the loyalty we've shown Jrue during his time here, such as giving him time off to support his wife, help us none now? Seems like the Pels have done right by him, and he's just looking to go money chasing somewhere else....

The Pels doing the right thing helps and if they don't he is 100% gone, but it doesn't obligate him to take lower $$$ here. He has to make a decison that is best for him and his family. If others are to be believed (and it makes sense), the Holidays do not love New Orleans. They are religious and would prefer a cleaner/safer city like west coast areas. We are dominated by Catholics and Baptists and have a major crime problem. We also don't have many healthy food options or hiking/outdoor (non-hunting/fishing) attractions.

I think Jrue would prefer somewhere in California, but Dallas or Denver would also be a good fit for his family. If he goes somewhere else, he is likely NOT chasing money, but rather leaving money on the table.

to be fair i think i would too
spent a couple weeks out west this year (CAL, UTA, COL) and its amazing how clean, squared away, busy and happy some other places in the country are compared to here

Yeah, if I were an NBA player of his status/earning power, I would easily take a paycut to play on the west coast instead of New Orleans.

I would, and I don't think that the Pels would need to include a pick. It would probably still give the Pels about a 8 mil TPE, too.

I would take anything if Jrue decides to leave New Orleans. Getting nothing in return for Jrue would really hurt us.

as for the Jrue loyalty thing, as much as I want Jrue to be loyal and agree to a sign-and-trade, he doesn't owe us anything. Jrue is in his prime and this FA period will be his big paycheck. So why not get wined and dined by other teams and see what looks best?

shoot if i was in his shoes I'd go meet with any team that was interested in signing me. get a chance to live in a new city and maybe play with my brother. those all sound really appealing and I cannot blame him for at least fielding offers

i'd be interested in an informed opinion on how a rubio for holiday trade would be structured, and in what sequence

1) sign holiday (to whatever contract he and MIN agree to?)
2) rubio is at $14.25MM, so how much more salary would the pels have to take back assuming holiday is north of 20?
3) the biggie...would the pels really have to send a pick asset if MIN is getting the "better" player?

I would, yes. Especially if Jrue is intent on leaving.

The only problem is that lineup in Minny would now be scary as frick.

Jrue
Butler
Wiggins
KAT

damn.

I mean you can't really "worry" too much about the other team. This way you, at least, get a reliable and burgeoning PG plus a decent backup stretch 4 and allow you to renounce Cunningham.

You can then use the MLE on CJ Miles or Bogdan Bogdanovc (wishful thinking) to give you some bench scoring. Maybe use the remaining trade exception to get another shooter.

If you can salvage the first and the Mavs are intent on going to get someone like Redick maybe you can do the talked about Asik deal for Matthews. Point is I think you allow yourself more roster building options doing this move.

I also think by including Bjelica or whatever other player we like and want to get that would allow Minny enough space to also sign Justin Holiday.

Minnesota, from what I know, has great schools, great weather during summer, a solid fan base, and a good front office - I can see the appeal and think Jrue would better suited for a smaller market like that compared to LA or somewhere on the west coast

that's a damn good line up and I'd be remissed if I didn't say I'd root for them on the DL.

Either way, where ever Jrue goes he will make that team instantly better.

The Pels sign Holiday using his Bird Rights, the Timberwolves have something like 22 mil in cap space even before trading away Rubio, so their cap space minus Rubio's contract would allow them to fit Jrue into their team without going over the cap. The Pels can take back Rubio plus the difference between Rubio's salary and Jrue's salary as a TPE.

For example:

Pelicans sign Jrue to a 4/110 contract (flat 27.5 per)

Minnesota fits Jrue into their cap because they have 22 in space and they are sending out Rubio (Jrue is only 27.5 mil, so he fits in easily)

Pels get back Rubio and his 14 mil in salary, and get an 13.5 mil TPE (the difference between Rubio and Jrue's salary), allowing them to stay above the cap

It's likely that Minnesota couldn't fit Jrue into their space without having to make other trades and they are attempting to trade Rubio anyway, so they could do this without the Pelicans having to give up an asset.

Minneapolis is an awesome city, I can attest to that.

I'd rather have Rubio at 14 than Jrue at 28, that's for sure.

(1) Yes
(2) We don't have to take any salary back besides Rubio. Minnesota has about $18M in space now, so without Rubio's $14M, they would have $32M.
(3) Yes we have to add an asset. The Wolves can make room for Jrue without the Pels. Rubio is not a negative asset. They could trade Rubio to another team for a pick and then sign Jrue outright. For us not to add anything would mean it is a pure salary dump of Rubio.

Exactly and we do them an extra solid by taking back Bjelica (who is expiring at $3.25m and won't block Diallo long term) - this opens up them to sign Justin Holiday assuming the package deal thing is legit (which I assume it is)

If the trade were to go down and we got, say CJ Miles with the MLE it would look like

Maybe you do keep Cunningham to play the 3 or you use the BAE on someone like Casspi or Swaggy P - maybe even get a DeAndre Liggins or James Young

Rubio / Cook / Jackson
Miles / Moore / Crawford
Hill / Cunningham / Pondexter
Davis / Bjelica / Diallo
Cousins / Ajinca

I like the makeup of that team...will it win a championship? Of course not, but it would be a playoff team and, more importantly, enough to keep Boogie and AD here longer

If we take back Bjelica, we'd maybe have to include an asset, depending on the T'wolves feelings concerning him. I think he has value, not sure if his team does, though.
