2016 Free Agency: Meyers Leonard could be the next Channing Frye for Alvin Gentry

Leonard could fill a similar role in New Orleans. He's already an adept three-point shooter, knocking down 39.1% of his 340 attempts over the last two seasons with the Portland Trail Blazers. (Channing Frye also played for the Blazers before teaming up with Gentry.) Leonard may also be quite available; the Blazers just signed Festus Ezeli to a two year contract to join a suddenly crowded front court with Al-Farouq Aminu, Mason Plumlee, Ed Davis, Noah Vonleh, and second round pick Jake Layman. Adding to the Blazers troubles, restricted free agent Allen Crabbe signed a massive offer with the Brooklyn Nets.

Not sure it's a difference maker move, but may replace some of Anderson's stretch 4 shooting. Still rather Vucevic!

For $2.9 million a year? We have no cap space.

He's going to have more Lucy's side pieces than Ryan Anderson did, mates

We couldn't possibly afford him.

This would probably be the most exciting addition to the roster aside from Buddy Hield imo. Anything to take minutes away from Omer Asik.

In theory, if you can dump Tyreke straight for nothing, you could get him. And/or maybe the Blazers could be interested in a sign and trade where they can get Ajinca for 3/15 as opposed to having to give 2-3 times that amount to Leonard

Crewz, what would be your thoughts on that? Would you like that move if we were somehow able to acquire Leonard? Good fit? Admittedly, I have limited knowledge about his game.

well i don't know what kind of interest he has around the league right now, but i could see a 1/1 deal with a promise of starting or lots of minutes to shine for next year

we'd probably have to move tyreke, though

If I recall, he turned down $15 million a year (4 years/$60 million). Even if we dumped Evans for nothing, we would still have to create more space to fit him even at that number.

I wonder if he even gets that much. The money is starting to dry up and I think the revelation that next year's cap was revised down to $102 instead of up to $110 threw a big monkey wrench into a lot of teams plans.

Unless he takes less money to come here I think that even if we moved BOTH Ajinca and Evans we still wouldn't have the space to sign him.

Intriguing possibility to say the least

ATL, you're right about that but I would think if it came down it he'd just resign with the Blazers for the QO at first and then try again next offseason...we would need to move both Ajinca and Tyreke and hope takes around $10m for the next two years (player after one) to get him and even then I wouldn't be shocked if the Blazers matched

Leonard was next on Dell's board, after Rivers FWIW. So, we know he liked him. If it was me, I would be trying to find a way to dump Reke and Ajinca and adding a backup 4 and Leonard.

But I don't know what the market is for Ajinca and Reke, nor do I know what it would take to pry Leonard away, so thats easy for me to say

I wonder if a 3 team S&T could be worked around revolving around Leonard to Pelicans, Tyreke to Miami, and a spread of delicious messican cuisine to Portland.

If true, probably a major oopsie. This was the summer of small ball. Everyone wanted players who could defend on the perimeter.

This would be a home run signing. I, like others, have a really hard time figuring out how we make it happen.

The Source is a TBW speculation article btw.
